The ninth holy month of the Islamic calendar is Ramadan in which all Muslims have to fast for the whole month. From sunrise to dusk, Muslims withhold from food, drink, and other awful habits.

With regard to teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during this holy month, Muslims are required to frequently recite the Holy Qur’an and perform more worship than in other Islamic months. Furthermore, Muslims are required to pay Zakaat for the whole year, and there is more and more charity for the poor and needy people in this month. The importance of this holy month is highlighted from the sayings of Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) narrated through several companions and also other saints.

As in Bukhari and Muslim, Abu Hurairah (Rehmatullah Allaih) mentioned that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: In Ramadan, the Gates of Heaven are open, and the Gates of Hell are shut, and the devils are put behind bars”.

In another report, the “Gates of Mercy” are mentioned in place of the “Gates of Heaven”. This saying represents that from the God’s side most of the arrangements are done for the Muslims so they could perform their worship and good deeds to get the eternal reward in Heaven. Moreover, One of the famous saints Shah Wali-ullah also mentioned that in this month, Muslims recite the Holy Qur’an and perform Taraweeh prayers. With more and more prayers and worships, Muslims get the happiness of God and they purify their hearts with the eternal light of faith. Additionally, performance of mystical deeds by the Muslims and the continuation of good deeds from generation to generations is continued in this month of Ramadhan.

The barakat, significance and the impact of the more and more worship performed Ramadhan even continues for the whole year. This also reveals that to keep oneself away from sins is not a big deal in the month of Ramadhan because one of the cruel things, which divert the Muslims attention from good deeds to bad deeds, is Shayateen is behind bars for the whole month. What is most important about this month is the efficacy of our body to control the physical as well as other desires thus our self control stimulates.

The basic aim of this holy month of Ramadhan is to take away Muslims from those sins and evil deeds which he had performed during the whole year and to engage Muslims in worship and perform good deeds. This month is considered as a blessing form God for the Muslims when they practice being away from cruel and bad habits and desires as well as those deeds which are not allowed in Islam.
