Surprising Study on Racism Rankings in the World

on Friday, May 24, 2013

A recent article published by the Washington Post on May 15th under the title of “A fascinating map of the world’s most and least racially tolerant countries,” revealed some rather interesting results. The article categorized nations into 7 levels of ‘racism.’

The question that was asked in the survey was whether people would want neighbors from another race. The categories were based on the percentage of people who said they would not want neighbors from a different racial background. The results were categorized in the following levels:

0%-4.9% (would not want a neighbor from a different race)

5%-9.9%

10%-14.9%

15%-19.9%

20%-29.9%

30%-39.9%

40% +

Among the countries that were placed in the 0%-4.9% category were: the United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Among the categories that fell under the second category were: Mexico, Spain, South Africa, and Pakistan. Most of the countries that fell under the 10%-14.9% category were Eastern European nations. The most notable countries that fell under the 15%-19.9% category are China and Russia. Countries that fell under the 20%-29.9% category included: Tunisia, Algeria, France, and Turkey. Countries that were placed under the 30%-39.9% included: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Indonesia, and South Korea. Jordan and India were among the countries that fell under the 40%+ category.

An interesting observation is that a number of countries that were placed in less-racist categories border some in more-racist countries. Pakistan, for example, a nation placed in the 5%-9.9% category borders India, which is under the 40%+ category. France, which is labeled under the 20%-29% category, borders Spain (5%-9.9%) and is right across the English Channel from the United Kingdom (0%-4.9%). Australia (0%-4.9%) is located very close to Indonesia (30%-39.9%).

Quite sadly, most of the Muslim countries that took part in the survey were in the more-racist categories, despite the fact that Islam denounces racism and has preached racial equality. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said in a hadith that there is no difference between an Arab and a non-Arab except with faith and righteousness. Unfortunately, national and ethnic pride has corrupted many Muslim societies, and, therefore, racism has spread within them.
