Hanif Kureshi, London’s Bestselling Author, Became a Victim of Suspected Fraud

on Friday, May 17, 2013

The bestselling author Hanif Kureshi has lost his life’s savings, which added up to 120,000 sterling pounds. He lost his money to a suspected fraud.

The writer lost most of his money due to a fake project. He was persuaded into investing on a property deal. The London-based author of Buddha of Suburbia and My Beautiful Laundrette was a victim of fraud.

Kureshi’s accountant is the man whom this property deal fraud is attributed. He was able to do so, as he convinced the writer by the claim that other “clients and friends” had also invested in the project.

Kureshi, being a writer, has confessed that he knows close to nothing about complex financial affairs and lacks the knowledge to be able to understand the processes of them. Because of this, he asked the London firm Fisher Phillips, company which was introduced to him by his agent on 2011.

The lost money was meant to cover the hard times of the author’s life. The company that assessed Kureshi, Fisher Phillips is believed to have important media clients. Trying to save its reputation, the firm has denied having taken any part on the fraud. The author’s accountant and the main suspect of the fraud, Adam Woricker was fired from the firm last July. Fisher Phillips have made it clear that they had no involvement whatsoever in the illegal acts of Woricker.

Woricker told Kureshi that the deal would be profitable. Kureshi said that “[he] was very helpful and charming.” The promised return was of 15%.

The email sent by Woricker to Kureshi read, “One of my clients is completing on a property deal. [..] I have put 20,000 pounds myself.”

The total amount invested by Kureshi was split into two partial payments- first 50,000 pounds and another 70,000 pounds. Not before long, the money was gone. He has been told that there almost no chance of him getting his money back.

Since Kureshi was recommended by Fisher Phillips, Kureshi is now raising a claim against the firm. Despite the arrest of Woricker this March, no charges have been made yet.
