Free Syrian Army rebels defect to Islamist group Jabhat al-Nusra

on Friday, May 17, 2013

Syria’s major equipped opposition group that is the Free Syrian Army is losing its armed potential to Jabhat al-Nusra. Jabhat al-Nusra is an Islamist association linked with AL-Qaida. Al-Qaida is equipped with latest and modern weapons, highly motivated and well financed force that is capable of fighting Bashar Al-Assad’s government. According to the commander of Free Syrian Army, it was mentioned that their whole unit has joined Al-Nusra. This is an evidence of the rapidly growing Al-Nusra. It seems that one day Al-Nusra will become as strong as Al-Quaeda, and FSA commander also revealed that they feel proud to join Al-Nusra. Growth of Al-Nusra is a serious threat for the United States and other governments as they are concerned about the question of arming anti-Assad insurgents. The United States secretary of state John Kerry said that if a dialogue process starts between the opposition and government of Syria as Russia and the United States proposed on Tuesday May 7, 2013 then definitely there is no need to take any action.

Concord between Moscow and Washington has created a problem for the France and United Kingdom. Under this agreement, it was recommended to lift the EU arms ban on Syria to help anti-Assad military. Foreign office appreciates this decision as a possible step forward, but forces associate and Assad have lost all authority. Officials of Free Syrian Army and Abu Ahmed said that FSA lost their major and important fighters and commanders to Al-Nusra in Idlib, Aleppo, Dier al-Zor, Hama and Damascus region. The Free Syrian Army is joining Al-Nusra very quickly, and the leader of the Sayyida Aisha brigade Ala’a al-Basha has informed the head of the Free Syrian Army about the general Salim Idriss’s problem last month. In the last few months, at least 3000 fighters of the Free Syrian Army have joined al- Nusra according to the head of the Sayyida Aisha Brigade Ala’a al-Basha. Major reason behind this problem is shortages of ammunition and weapons, according to the Ala’a al-Basha.

He also said that the Free Syrian Army Fighters in the region of Banias are leaving the unit just because of weapon shortage as they don’t have enough weapons to fight against the rebels. Ahrar al-Shimal brigade of the Free Syrian Army has joined al-Nusra, and 65 fighters of Sufiyan al-Thawri brigade in Idlib also joined al-Nusra a few months back only due to the reason of weapon shortage. Officials said that if they will not be able to overcome this situation immediately then surely they will lose their power and hold. Other factors behind this problem include ideology majority of the Free Syrian Army. People is joining Al-Nusra just because of Islamic teachings like sincerity, latest guns and good funding.

Commander of the Free Syrian Army has said that we don’t have latest, modern and advance fighting weapons to fights with insurgents, and that’s why fighters are leaving the Free Syrian Army and joining the al-Nusra group. He said that we are like a tap, when the supply of weapons is smooth then we are in a good position, and we are able to fight but suddenly when tap dries we not capable of fighting. The United States has also declared al-Nusra as a terrorist organization, but the United States hesitates to provide weapons to the Free Syrian Army. In short, if the Free Syrian Army are able to overcome the weapon shortage problem then they are in a good position to fight against Al-Assad rebel force. Fighter said that they do not blame fighters to join al-Nusra terrorist group, but they blame the West who has left Assad rebel forces kill them.
