This topic has been a major debate between Christians and Muslims for a very long time. As per Muslims, Islam is the last and eternal religion and Christians disagree with that. Muslims say that Jesus himself mentioned that Muhammad would come, and that was and still the main point of disagreement. The Christians believe that the words of the bible are being misinterpreted.
We will discuss this main point of disagreement to see if there is any truth in this. To start, the book of Deuteronomy 18:18 has a prophecy which says that God would send a prophet like Moses from the brothers of the Israelites. If we study the history closely, we will see that Muhammad was an Ishmaelite who is a descendent of Ishmael, the son of Abraham. Ishmaelites are brothers of Israelites. Also, if we looked at the Christian Scholar Reverend James Dow, he mentioned in his book “Dictionary of Bible” that Muhammad was the only person in history who could be compared to Moses. Both of these points to the above prophecy mention Muhammad as being the prophet who was to come.
Now, when we come to the point where Jesus mentioned the coming of Muhammad, we see in John 16:7-14, it is mentioned that Jesus described who was to come after him. In his description, he used the word Paraclete in several places for pointing to the person who would come. The Paraclete is a Word from the Greek Manuscript which means Ahmad which is also the name of Muhammad. Of course, there was a lot of confusion and disagreement on the use of word Paraclete. Many Christians say that the word in this context means Holy Spirit, but if we go back in history and read about some known Scholars like Spitta, Sasse and Betz they were all of the opinion that Paraclete did not refer to the Holy Spirit.
Also, one of the main issues raised by Muslims is that the Gospel was translated from Aramaic to the Greek language and the main concern was that the words were lost in translation and that Jesus referred to Muhammad by name. As per the Quran, Jesus did mention Muhammad by name and said to his followers that Muhammad would come and save them.
The point of Christians that the word Paraclete refers to the Holy Spirit was also challenged quite a bit by the Muslim Scholars. They said that Jesus clearly mentioned that Paraclete would come only after Jesus has gone away and as per the Bible the Holy Spirit was there before and during the life of Jesus.
With the above arguments, we can say that Christianity was not the last religion. Jesus himself mentioned that the one coming after him and also so did Moses. Many persons in the past did not accept that Jesus was not the prophet that Moses mentioned would come after him.
