The Hot Blooded Tennis Star: Marat Safin

on Saturday, June 22, 2013

“I’m Russian, but I am 100 percent Muslim.” These are the words of yet another exemplary Muslim Tennis Player Marat Mubinovich Safin. The 33 years old Russian Muslim is an internationally acclaimed tennis star. Tennis, in fact, runs in his blood; his parents used to play tennis, whereas his younger sister Dinara Safina is previously WTA World number 1. The whole family is a great contributor to classy tennis for years.

Career:

Because he belonged to a tennis playing family, the sport was running in his veins. He gained his early training from his father at a club where the old tennis player used to run. For better training and learning opportunities, Marat moved to Spain when he was still very young (14). This change worked pretty well for him, and helped turn him into a groomed tennis player.

Beginning his professional career in the year 1997, he moved on tremendously to defeat the legends like André Agassi and Gustavo Kuerten in French Open the next year. Year 1999 brought him his first ATP title at Boston.

A big landmark in his tennis career was awaiting him in 2000, when he managed to win Grand Slam at US Open. He defeated Pete Sampras to attain his first Grand Slam Tournament.

The years 2002, 2004, and 2005 also provided him with the opportunity to make history by winning Australian Open Grand Slam Tournaments; but he unfortunately missed all of these chances. Nevertheless, he happened to beat the legendary Roger Federer.

The enthusiastic and energetic young Muslim tennis player managed to bring Davis Cup for his country in 2002 as well as in 2006. In 2005, he won the Australian Open. Towards the end of the year, a knee injury was inflicted upon him. Unfortunately, he was unable to get a complete recovery as yet, because he refused to take ample rest immediately after the injury. Rather, Safin went on playing and contesting in tournaments by using pain killers. This was absolutely wrong approach, which brought him suffering only.

After coping with his injuries a bit, Marat Safin went on a frenzy of endless winnings! The year 2006 brought him much grace, accomplishment, and praise.

In 2008, Safin became the first ever Russian male tennis star to go as far as Wimbledon Semi Final, where Roger Federer defeated him. In the end of 2008, he announced that it was very much likely for him to retire. He retired the following year.

Personality:

Marat Safin is usually described as an angry young man who loves to break his racquets. It was reported that he smashed 87 racquets in a single year, making it a world record. It is said that he sometimes exhibited flares of emotion in the tennis court during an ongoing match. About his short temper, he said:

“All the Muslim people are passionate, stubborn. We have hot blood.”

The hot-blooded ex-tennis star is now a member of the Russian Parliament. He belongs to Vladimir Putin’s political party.
