Have UK failed to offer protection to Muslims?

on Saturday, June 8, 2013

Security is a major issue and point of concern for the Muslims living in the western countries. This security concern is not against the Muslims in all cases, but also from the Muslim. Many people, who say that they are Muslims, use Islam in a wrong way to harm others, and in many cases use verses from their religion. If we look at the Islamic scholars, this is something that they completely prohibit in Islam, and in many cases they go as much as saying “One who harms the innocent is not a one of us”. But there are still people who misuse the religion, and thus cause concerns for other innocent Muslims who want to live a normal live.

Authorities in the UK have worked, or at least they say that they have, to make sure that Muslims are protected. But of course when we look at previous facts and news stories this does not seem to be the case. There are many cases where we see Muslims being wrongly accused of crimes that they have not committed, a lot of Muslim houses were raided for terrorist activities when they have nothing to do with terrorism, and also in many cases young Muslim males being wrongly tortured by authorities to get information that they do not have.

The Muslim organizations in the UK are now creating their own safety guidelines after not getting full support for the protection they need. One example is an Islamic Organization in Bradford which due to security concerns, asked Muslim women not to wear Hijab in public places which is the common dress for Muslim women. Also many Muslim organizations have also recommended adult males to not have beards so that they are not very easily noticed among the crowd.

One example of a Muslim wrongfully accused is Mohammad Hussain of London who was arrested after the London terrorist attacks in 2008. He was arrested and tortured as he was reported by some fellow colleagues of being a terrorist. He was kept in prison for over 5 days and then was released. There are more examples of such cases, if we look at the recent history. Similarly, Lotfi Raissi from west London was wrongfully accused of terrorist training in piloting the planes that caused the 9/11 attacks.

With all the above, it does seem that the UK as a country is not able to provide the security that the Muslim community needs. Most if not all Muslim community members are always living in fear. Even though the policies and rules do not cause any direct issues for the Muslim community, but they also do not provide any sense of security or comfort for them. In many cases, a lot of Muslim families due to this reason are moving back to their native countries if they are immigrants, and for those who live in the UK their whole life, they are just living in fear.
