Heracleion is an ancient city shrouded in myth that was swallowed by the Mediterranean Sea 1200 years ago. Now, archeologists and geologists have finally explored the mystery of this ancient city. They are uncovering the amazing and surprising well conserved artifacts to reveal the story and mystery of exciting classical era port.

Heracleion was discovered by Dr. Frank Goddio, a well known French underwater archeologist and some other members from European Institute for Underwater Archeology after 4 year geophysical study and survey. Ruins of this ancient Egyptian city were found 30 feet below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea in Abukir near Alexandria.

New and recent documentary reports highlight numerous major discoveries. Archeologist’s discoveries reveal that Heracleion was not only an international trade center, but it was also an important religious center. According to the report of Telegraph, a leading research center revealed that Heracleion served as major trade port between the Nile and Mediterranean.

So far more than 700 anchors and 65 ancient shipwrecks were unearthed from the sand of bay. Some other discoveries include: weights from Athens, gold coins, and giant tablets inscribed in ancient Egyptian and ancient Greek. Researchers and archeologists think that these artifacts reveal the city’s prominence as major trade center.

Researchers and archaeologists have also discovered a variety of numerous religious artifacts in Sunken City. About 16 foot stone sculptures are said to be the city’s main temple and limestone. Various experts, geologists and archeologists are equally impressed upon the exploration of such a well preserved port. The archeologists’ and geologists’ evidences are overwhelming.

Professor Sir Cunliffe, a well known archeologist at University of Oxford, is taking part in quarry. He mentioned in his press release, ‘’by lying well preserved and untouched artifacts under the mud and sand on the surface of Mediterranean Sea for centuries, they are brightly conserved and protected.” Team of archeologists who were taking part in the discovery of Egyptian ancient city presented their major findings at Oxford University Seminar.

Despite numerous exciting and thrilling discoveries, one mystery about Heracleion ancient Egyptian City is still unsolved. Why accurately did it sink……? Goddio and his team proposed that the weight of heavy buildings on the region water and reveal that sand soil and clay may have caused the ancient city to go underwater in the wake of an earthquake.
