Iranians are marking 24 years since the death of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ruhollah Ayatollah Khomeini. A huge ceremony was held at a place of religious devotion, where Ayatollah Khomeini is buried, high officials of the state including Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attended the ceremony.

Presidential elections that should be held after almost ten days which is quite a big event as far as the politics of Iran are concerned. At the ceremony, grandson of late Ayatollah Khomeini Hassan Khomeini also addressed a speech to the nation. After spending 15 years of exile, Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Tehran and emerged as a leader who got immense popularity and that is the reason he successfully overthrow Shah who was said to be an appointee of the United States Of America. Islamic revolution was the only way out of the situation and Ayatollah Khomeini did exactly that 34 years ago.

One of the journalists of Al Jazeera’s TV was reporting from the Iranian capital that the only thing that was awkward in the ceremony at the shrine was that president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not address a speech to the nation while as per previous practice he always used to speak to his nation at this particular event. The reporter also added that there was curiosity found among the people of Iran asking why didn’t the president address his nation; however, considering an event like this it was necessary for the president to give a speech.

Tussle between the president and Hassan Khamenei

Al Jazeera’s Soraya Lennie was of the view that it might be because of the fact  that there were tension growing among the religious parties and the president so this could be one of the reasons that president Ahmadinejad was feeling uncomfortable in the situation. Earlier in the presidential elections, Hassan Khomeini backed any other candidate which was about four years ago. Hassan Khomeini is believed to be one of the influential individual in Iran, as well.

The ceremony that was telecast on the national and national media , Khamenei imposed that every candidate for the presidential elections should know clearly that they should not have any soft corner for the western countries.

The reaction that came from Khamenei on particular had a lot to do with the recent statements by the candidates in which most of them said that they would be focusing on the development of the relations with the other countries.

Khamenei was of the view that candidates are having perceptions that the situation and the relationship with other western countries will get better if some concessions are made, but he said it is not allowed at any cost. Recently, the reaction that came from the US in which new sanctions were imposed on Iran, making it more difficult for Iran to boost up the economy as a car making industry. Those measures would have a definite impact on Iran.
