It’s been almost 24 years when Khomeini’s died but still there are different philosophies moving around Iran regarding Khomeini’s legacy. The nation seems to be divided on this issue as the recent comments by the supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei made it clear that Khamenei’s legacy is one of the major reasons for the resistance.
There were many political changes in Iran for the last thirty years or so. First of all, Shah who was said to be a man appointed by America and was forced to stay out of politics of Iran by Khomeini. Khomeini led Iran, and politics in Iran was revolutionized. As Khomeini took over the Iranian politics, there was a clear difference in Iran’s standing. Most of the senior citizens remember that era when the course changed that not only had an impact on Iran itself but also influenced the whole Middle East.
Iran went through the rebuilding phase during Khomeini regime, and Khomeini ruled almost 34 years. The vision by Khomeini led Iran to a level where Iran was seen as one of the most prominent Islamic republican nations.
Iran was still in a rebuilding phase when Khomeini died in 1989 and left many issues unresolved like the legacy – he left behind. Since then there were many debates regarding ongoing revolution process in Iran. As presidential elections are due now, and it would be clear in the coming few days what would be the standing of Iran in international politics as a new president would be leading the country.
The Nuclear Program:
After the elections, international media would be focusing on nuclear policy. “It is expected that there would be a positive change in the nuclear policy and it would be rather interesting to see what happens next”, said Ian Black, a Middle East analyst while talking to Al-Jazeera.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei spoke a lot in his statement about foreign policies, and he also said that there would be no concessions given to the United States and UK. While he was addressing on the 24th anniversary of Khomeini’s death, he said Khomeini made Iran and independent state; however, this kind of statement came up after the sanctions imposed on Iran by the US.
Difference of Opinion:
Political parties in Iran have different views about the foreign policies adopted by the government. Due to the sanctions imposed on Iran, there is a major setback in the Iranian economy. Currency devalued that not only has an impact on the inflation rate but also there are not enough employment opportunities. Mohammed Marandi, an expert in Tehran University appreciated the moves by the government to overcome all the problems that have been faced by the government for last two years.
