The Reluctant Fundamentalist~~ Worth Watching!

on Wednesday, June 5, 2013

The movie begins with a scene in Lahore, year 2011. A Pakistani young man Changez is being interviewed by an American Journalist, Bobby at a café in Lahore. It is the first scene of the movie named The Reluctant Fundamentalist where Changez was telling about all his experiences in the USA before and after 9/11.

The movie name The Reluctant fundamentalist is made on the basis of a book written by the renowned writer Mohsin Hamid. Though the book starts with the line “Excuse me, sir, but may I be of assistance?” Where the movie starts with the conversation between two men. It is pretty obvious that, not everything written in the book goes perfectly in the movie and for the sake of the movie, some changes are always approved there! The movie comes up demonstrating the relationship between Muslims and west mainly after the twin tower accident on 9/11.

Throughout the movie, Changez Khan understands that, he will never become an American in spite of having an American educational degree and a handsome earning job in Wall Street. With his brownish colored skin and bearded face, he is and will always be treated as a potential terrorist in the eye of American police and government. From the movie, you will come to know how every Muslim feels when they are gone through excessively intimate interrogation and requested to step aside in the immigration procedures by the relevant officers. Nicely pictured in the movie by the actor of the Changez khan expressing the anger and sorrows in the face.

Changez Khan graduated from a renowned university and got his employment in a prestigious firm of Wall Street. His boss was very kind and gave him fatherly behavior who then turned into someone like enemy after Changez resigned from his job. Things become upside down after the great twin tower massacre on 9/11.

The movie was directed by Mira Nair who herself is an award winning director. She is not so armature in the group of directors who have already made short films on the theme of 9/11. As Lahore, in The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Delhi was renovated and pictured. The name Chengez implies the French meaning ‘Change’, but Hamid says, it was not kept deliberately.

Riz Ahmed played successfully the character Changez Khan. Actor’s bold and nicely expressive eyes face with sensitivity is his powerful weapon in this film where it was of great use. When you can’t say anything and shout in anger, your eyes and facial expression are the only media to show that. And here Changez gone through many times in such situations and Riz was able to show up the situation successfully. But at the end of the movie, when Riz has to give a speech in Urdu, the scene becomes a biggest imperfection in the movie. The overall story says that, Changez passed maximum time in Pakistan and Urdu is his mother tongue, Riz should have been very fluent and flawless in the language. Otherwise, he was good at his work.

Other actors in the movie are, Kate Hudson as Erica, played the role of girlfriend of Changez. American journalist Booby was played by Liev Schreiber. The man awesomely fulfilled his work in the movie and produced many folds of his personality, which turns the every second of the movie worth watching. Other actor and actresses are Om Puri as Abbu, Shabana Azmi as Ammi. Meesha Shafi as sister and in the role of that fatherly boss who turned enemy later was played by Kiefer Sutherland!

It is a movie that must be seen. The truth about the current situation and relation between Muslims and the west. The pain of being suspected every time as a terrorist, blamed and insulted in spite of being innocent. If you watch it, share your experience with us. Don’t know, can the western people change their view towards innocent people and can find out the difference between Muslims and Terrorist?
