Helping special people to be a part of society

on Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Even after entering the adulthood my sister conduct is the same as when she was five or six years old. But there is some lack of development in her due to the fact that she was a patient of Down’s syndrome, which also affects her hearing sense. She could not speak either, and most of the time she relies on verbal signs so that she can express herself in a better way.

We all loved her since she was a baby girl. The good thing about her was that she was not limited to her room only; she was involved in all the activities of the house. We had a whole routine set up for her to which she was comfortable obviously. We always had conversations in a way she liked to have. When we had conversations, it was like we were bonded with something regardless of the fact that she could not express herself in a way that other people do.

She was always happy with the way she was living but sometimes the behavior of the fellow human beings makes hers uncomfortable. All of those activities that I did were to keep her happy and make her feel that she is now a grown up person. But now I must mention here the point at which the things started to fall apart. Most of the people have a habit to stare, don’t know why, but maybe they do it unintentionally, but the person to whom you are staring at feel uncomfortable. Same thing happened to my sister and what people normally do to her is that they completely ignore her pretending that she is not present.

A girl like my sister is very self-conscious, and when people try to have the kind of gesture that makes her realize that she is not the right person to communicate with, then it would be unjustified. To my opinion people like my sister needs to have special attention as this attention boosts her confidence. If we do realize that we do have a role to play in society then the imbalance in the society can be managed easily. All of the civilized societies should have a responsible behavior towards each others. Socially when you are living in a society where there are different kinds of people including special ones then you have to accept the presence of such kind of people.

If you observe closely you would come to know that special people already have a kind of life that you would not wish to have. In this regard, if you won’t allow these special people to be themselves then how could you expect them to be living a life normally?
