Why the West has Misconceptions related to Islam?

on Tuesday, June 4, 2013

People of different religions usually respect the ideas of each other and show mutual respect for each other, but this is not true in case of Islam. Today, Muslims and Islam are not given the due respect, and many people especially from the west show hatred towards both Islam and its followers. The reason for such a behavior is that people have many misconceptions regarding Islam. There are various reasons for why west has misconceptions regarding Islam.

The most obvious reason is that most of the people who show hatred towards Islam and Muslims are those who have no knowledge of what Islam is all about. Their ideas are fed to them by others. Their vision is developed by the media and those who are against Islam. In such conditions, people never get to fully realize the ideas of Islam as their minds are developed to follow what others have fed them.

Most of the people think that the rules of Islam are too strict to be applied. This is the basic misconception that people have regarding Islam. The most obvious example is the law that the hands of the one who commits theft should be cut off. When people hear about this rule, they start thinking that Islam is a very violent religion without going into details of what the law really is. Now, the law is that the cutting of the hands depends on the will of the victim. If he forgives the thief, there is no punishment, and if he wants punishment for the thief, then one hand is cut at first. Now, people will start feeling sorry for the thief and will take pity on him without thinking how much loss can be avoided and how many people can be saved from committing acts of theft only if one person is punished. Punishing one person will set an example for the others, and they will know that they will be punished without any discrimination.

People also think that there is no tolerance in Islam. They think that Islam orders its followers to kill the believers of the other religions, and they also give reference of this order in the Holy Quran. This is also due to the lack of knowledge and the reference they give is out of context. While developing such misconceptions, people just forget to realize that the Muslim era was the most peaceful era. When people wanted peace, they invited Muslim armies to save them from the tyranny of their cruel masters and history proves it. Muslims and non-Muslims used to live in communities for many years peacefully. In fact, non-Muslims have special rights in Islam, and no Muslim is supposed to snatch their rights.

There are scores of other examples which can be quoted here, but the main idea is that people have misconceptions regarding Islam because they don’t know Islam, and they do not want to know it. The people who put effort in learning Islam are so impressed by it that they get converted.
