Child limit for Burmese Muslims

on Wednesday, June 5, 2013

Rakhine state officials say the limit on children will help ease tensions with Buddhists, whose population is growing at a slower rate.

According to the new laws in Burma, there are limitations announced by the government that a Muslim couple can have only two children. There are lots of tension between the Buddhists and the Muslims in Rakhine state, and this state in particular have a slower rate of growth among the Buddhists population. However, laws were made by the officials in order to decrease the tension between the Muslims and the Buddhists. Muslims are in a large number in the province of Burma which makes the Buddhists feel insecure. The policy is made by the government officials so that the Buddhists don’t attack the Muslim community.

There were enough pressure raised on to the Burmese government to stop the killings of innocent Muslims by the Buddhists, and in order to cope with the situation the government has come up with that law which obviously don’t make any sense. However, it is said that the tension between the two communities have gone quite low, and the situation is under control for the moment. There are two Rakhine townships that are nearest to the Bangladeshi borders. Those townships have a high population of Muslims resided, and that is why the policy would be implemented in those states, as well.

It was almost a week ago when the laws were passed by the government, and the government is trying to take the precautionary measures by deputing the forces to those regions that were the origin of the dispute. Family planning programs are announced for the Muslims community to cut down their population growth.

Rakhine state spokesman Win Myaing was of the view that there were tensions between the two communities, and we finally have sorted out the reason that makes them fight with each other. The higher numbers of Muslims are creating the problem.

Due to violence in the country, there were perceptions developed in the whole country about the negative image of the Muslims; however, President Thein Sein’s government is still taking the pressure as it is claimed that the government had failed to get the situation in control. The opposition leader is also criticized by the people who have failed to speak in favor of the Muslim community. Win Myaing was not clear about the opinion of implementing the same policy throughout the country, but in initial stages this policy will be made mandatory for the provinces of Buthidaung and Maundaw.

According to the reports submitted by the commission who was assigned a task to find out the reason that causes the tension, the only sense of insecurity made it all happen. The Buddhists feel threatend from the Muslims.
