The French magazine “Le Point” reported that the French National Institute of consumption in France discovered that Pepsi and Coca-Cola do contain a small percentage of alcohol.
The magazine said that the Institute announced this discovery after conducting several tests for the benefit of “60 million consumers” magazine.

The French National Institute said that about half of the Cola and Pepsi types that were tested show that their alcohol content was in a very small amount of up to 10 mg per liter of a 0.001% alcohol.

The statement of the institute mentioned that it conducted the tests on 19 different types of Cola and Pepsi; when they found that 9 types of them do not contain alcohol, while 10 types contain less than 10 mg per liter, including Coca-Cola Classic and Coca-Cola Light and zero calories, Pepsi and Pepsi Max classic.

This announcement might not have a great effect in France; as the presence of alcohol in beverages and drinks with the “alcohol-free” sign is not an issue; as long as those drinks only contain a quantity of less than 1.2% of alcohol according to the law. The magazine pointed out that this discovery will be a problem for the faithful Muslims who are keen to consume Halal products.

The scientific director for Coca-Cola Company in France, Michel Pepin:
‘It is possible that traces of alcohol come from the process’ of making Coca Cola according to its secret recipe’ Mr. Pepin added: ‘Furthermore, the Paris Mosque has provided us with a certificate stating that our products can be consumed by the Muslim community in line with the religious opinions of the Committee of the Mosque of Paris.’
He also stressed that some of the fruit contains a small percentage of alcohol.

On the other side, a spokesman from Pepsi said that some of the non-alcoholic classifies beverages may contain simple effects of alcohol coming from the ingredients used, denying that existence of alcohol in the recipe of Pepsi or Coca-Cola.

Moving to the comments of Coca Cola Egypt as a Muslim country; Ms. Ghada Makadi the Regional Director for Communications and External Relations for Coca-Cola Company in Egypt said the company’s products in the Egyptian market are non-alcoholic drinks, adding that alcohol is not an ingredient in any of the company’s products.

Ms. Makadi also said that the company’s products are all considered Halal products. Moreover, she said that the company is subjected to all the standards and conditions announced by the Ministry of Health, adding to the presence of international and periodic monitoring on the quality of the company’s products.

Ms. Makadi also demanded the review of reports issued by the Ministry of Health officials regarding their periodic monitoring on Coca-Cola products, as to avoid any negative rumors which might cause harm to her company.
