Hijab in Islam

on Wednesday, July 18, 2012

The almighty Allah created the whole universe. None of the creature, living or non-living, is there which is not entitled to be the creatures of Allah. Being the creator, Allah knows the best about the human beings’ necessities. He has bestowed upon a religion namely Islam which is as natural as human beings’ nature require. Islam has given its teachings to its followers in each aspect of life.  Whether it is about clothing, eating, worshiping, getting married, mourning, governing the state, or serving the people etc.  Islam has guided its followers completely.

Islam does not leave its followers all alone and in worrisome situation. If Islam makes sure that a person’s rights are protected, then at the same time it imposes some duties as well on that person . These obligations and duties may relate to a person’s own self or these may be related about others rights.

Women hold a significant and precious position in Islam. As Islam gives a woman a prestigious status and importance, it makes sure that this precious entity remains safe and honorable. As we experience in our lives that if a person loves a thing most, then he tries his best that his beloved thing remain safe from others. He covers that thing very well and keeps that hidden from others. The same situation can be said about Islamic stance over women. Islam orders its followers women wear a hijab while going out of their houses or even if they have to face unrelated men while staying in their houses.

Islam asks women to cover their entire body except face, hands, and feet in the above mentioned situations. Islam orders and tries to make sure that the women cover themselves properly.  In accordance to the Islamic injunctions, a woman may leave her hands uncovered to wrists. Likewise, she is allowed to keep her feet uncovered to the ankle. A woman is restricted to uncover her hair at all to another opposite sex other than her husband or other related persons.

Islam even does not leave men without such preachings. Islams prohibits men to unveil their ‘Satar’. Nevertheless, the concept of hijab in men is not that much wider than that of women. As women have to cover all their bodies except a few parts but as far as men are concerned, men must cover their body parts from the navel to the knees. The covering of all other parts is not obligatory as much and they do not come in satar.  Instead to hijab , for men Islam only uses the word ‘satar’ precisely.

Moreover, Islam asks both women and men to lower their eyes while walking. Islam ensures in its injunctions and practices, that women dignity and prestige remain safe. The Islamic concept of hijab is not just an obligation that it asks its followers to obey but this concept is purposeful and based on an objective. It not only ensures the women’s dignity and honor but it also proves to be very beneficial for the whole societal values in the long term.
