Syria Peace Meeting Delayed

on Wednesday, June 12, 2013

There are many attempts by the US and the United Nations to have peace talks between Syria and Israel on the issue that have not only created a disturbance in the region but also have made many countries like the US worry about the future of the region.

The US is of the view that there are evidences that chemical weapons are used in the Syrian war. The UN’s international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said both of the sides are not willing to resolve the issue as they are not going to attend the peace conference that was to be held in Geneva.

While the Russian government wants the Syrian president to attend the meeting, because they think that there could be no solution unless both countries have a mutual desire to stop the war. The Russian authorities are also emphasizing that the Syrian president should start peace talks. still there are lots of things to be done before we move further, Brahimi said in a statement. We are unable to bring up the two parties on a table because there are some extraordinary measures required to bring them both to talk, he added. It’s a moment of embarrassment for us because we are unable to organize the meeting but still there are chances that we might bring them to peace talk in July, Brahimi said.

Who would be participating?

Barhimi was of the view that the delay does not mean that we don’t have a chance, but this delay in peace talks is majorly due to the Syrian authorities. The situation got even worse when the UN, the US and the Russian officials had a meeting in Swiss city to decide what would be the agenda of the meeting, and who would be taking part in the peace talks, but unfortunately no considerable progress was made.

Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov while having the press conference said that the only conflict to raise during the meeting was who would be attending the peace conference and no one come up to a mutual understanding.

The Syrian government is still facing opposition regarding the participation in the peace talks, and that is the reason why the Syrian government is not taking up the issue seriously, Gatilov added. The idea was first forwarded by the US and Russia, and the only thing on which both of these countries did not agree upon was the participation of Syria. Earlier, the plan was decided that the meeting would be held in May and from there the plan would move forward.

According to Al-Jazeera, what they all are trying to do is to bring both of the countries together so that they could have face to face talks with each other as this is the only solution.
