Restoration of Peace: Table talks with Taliban in Doha

on Thursday, June 20, 2013

After Taliban has finally decided to open one of their political offices in Doha, Qatar, the president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai announced that he would be sending representatives to Doha to discuss peace matters with Taliban. The representatives were sent a day after the opening ceremony of the political office. From this fact, it can clearly be seen that Taliban is now having clear intentions about their presence in that region which could be very alarming for most of the countries in the Middle East region, especially with the situations in Syria and Egypt that are already creating disturbance in the region.

However, this step is considered to be a major step forward in reaching a mutual understanding to cease fire of the war that was initiated 12 years ago against the armed groups. Opening an office for Taliban in Doha may help this cause and eventually could bring peace in the region.

In year 2010, a peace council was formed by Afghanistan president, the idea behind this council was to have a sort of platform on which these matters could be discussed. While having a conference at Kabul, President Hamid Karzai said that the peace council would be leaving for Qatar to start discussions of how peace could be attained in the region. President Karzai is also aware of the fact that the peace talks are the only solution for the problem and could not be achieved unless Taliban group is involved.

Coalition forces have been doing an operation in Afghanistan for a while but now the security being handed over to the Afghan forces by the coalition forces. While speaking at the ceremony Karzai seems satisfied with the process. While answering questions about the peace talks Karzai said the outcome of the peace talks would be highly appreciable. On the ther side, there was no immediate response from Taliban.

Al Jazeera correspondent was having an interview with the advisor of Afghan president Hamid Karzai in which he mentioned and announced the above details.
