Achievements of Sania Mirza in Tennis

If we look at the career of Sania Mirza as a player, Sania has participated in almost every big tournament. India doesn’t have famous names in tennis as Sania Mirza who got immense popularity not only because she belonged to a country that have no other athletes’ in the field of tennis but also because of the fact that she was a teenager when she started her career, and joined all tennis major events.

Let’s have a look at how Sania started her career as a tennis player. Sania Mirza was born on the 15th of November 1986 in Mumbai India and belonged to a religious Muslim family. Her father Imran Mirza was a sports journalist and belonged to Hyderabad. At the early age, Sania’s father realized that his child had a potential in playing tennis, so he started to motivate and train his daughter. After having graduated from St. Marry’s college, Sania turned into a professional player in 2003. At a junior level, Sania proved to be a promising young girl and won 10 single and 13 double titles to her name. She was the only girl in the Indian tennis history to have such achievements. The first major event that she played was in 2002 in which she helped India in getting a bronze model, and from there on Sania started to participate in all major events. In 2003, Sania Mirza won the Wimbledon Championships Girls’ Doubles title for the first time and became the first girl in India to participate in Wimbledon. Sania had a great French open tour in 2004 in which she and her partner reached the semifinals. Sania successfully played quarter finals of the US open in 2002.

Sania made her debut in 2001 using the platform of ITF when she was only 15 years old. After two years, Sania picked four gold medals in Afro Asian games that were held in her home town Hyderabad. Years 2004 and 2005 were the years that turned the life of Sania as a tennis player. In 2005, while playing Australian open, she defeated most of the best players of the tournament and successfully entered into the second round where she was defeated by Sarena Williams. Sania had a unique record for being the only female tennis star of India that won a WTA title in February 2005. Sania Mirza continued her success, and defeated the world number four Sevetlana Kuzentsova in straight sets in 2005 US open. Playing in a tournament like Wimbledon 2005, Sania was able to reach the second round which was quite a success for a newcomer player. In August same year, Sania had an access to the fourth round of the grand slam tournament which made her the only female tennis player in the history of India to reach the fourth round of US open; however, she got defeated by Maria Sharapova in the 16th round.

After having a great 2005 season, Sania was the most prominent player in the history of India and her commitment at an early age made her win WTA new comer of the year. Sania had a good 2005 season at which Sania was able to reach the semifinals of Japan open where she got defeated by Tatiana Golovin.

Season 2006 proved to be even better for Sania Mirza as she reached the second round of the Australian open; however, in 2006 French open she didn’t even win the first round. In Doha Asian games, Sania won the gold medal in mixed doubles and two bronze medals in the women’s single and team. In 2007, Sania Mirza had a breakthrough of her career as in most of the grand slam tournaments she reached the quarter and the semifinals. In 2007, she finally had a success and reached the third round of the US open. Year 2007 proved to be a huge success as Sania Mirza won four double titles in 2007.

In 2008, Sania had a chance to represent India in summer Olympics that was held in Beijing. This year was not very successful for Sania as she has wrist injuries which forced her to withdraw from most of the matches that she played in 2008 including 2008 French open and US open.

In 2009, Sania had a first grand slam title to her name as she won the final of 2009 Australian open mixed doubles, Mahesh Bhupati was playing partner in that final. Sania had a great run in the Toray Pan pacific open in which she reached the semi final but then was defeated from Franacesca Schiavone. In November 2010 while playing in the Asian games, Sania again reached the semifinals of the tournament but could not make it to the finals and had a bronze medal. In the same event, she also reached the mixed double finals and won a silver medal. The same year in December, Sania was able to win Al-Habtoor tennis championship by defeating 6th, 8th and 2nd seeds of the tournament.

In 2011, Sania was one of those players who had success that eventually took her from 141 ranked to be 104 ranked at the end of the year. In year 2012, Sania again played a quarter and semi finals of most of the major tournaments including the third round of the 2012 Wimbledon championship. In 2013, Sania Mirza reached the quarter finals of the Australian open mixed doubles. Dubai Duty Free tennis championship was also a success for Sania Mirza.
