Pakistan and Iran are two brotherly Muslim Countries that stand with each other in every difficult time. During the last few years, there were many occasions when Pakistan stood with Iran on various issues including their nuclear program. Pakistan is also against any kind of military operation from any other country againt Iran concerning this issue. On the other hand, Iran also helped Pakistan in 2005 earthquake as well as 2010 floods that caused destruction at a large scale.
In Pakistan, the energy crises is one of the biggest problem nowadays. The industries are closed down or moved to other countries. The gas and electricity load shedding is on the peak. There are 3-4 days closing of gas for the industries in Faisalabad region of Pakistan which is known for its clothing industry. So the Pakistani people are really worried about their living and especially the masons that are working in these industries. The gas shortage is very high that sometimes it is also not available for the household.
So keeping all these things in mind and looking at the economic situation of Pakistan, Iran has offered its gas supply to Pakistan. After this offer from Iran, the Pakistani government officials took a deep look at the situation and then after checking the feasibility of this gas pipeline and its need for the general public of Pakistan, Pakistan and Iran signed an agreement. After the agreement, the world community especially the American officials felt very much concerned. They say that if Pakistan carries out the agreement, sections might be imposed on Pakistan.
On the other hand, the government of Pakistan is under pressure from its own people, for fulfilling the agreement, because they wanted to have Gas in the country to run their own businesses and use it in houses, as well. So keeping this in mind the president of Pakistan “Asif Ali Zardari” and the Iranian President ”Mahmood Ahmadinejad” held a groundbreaking ceremony of this Pak-Iran gas pipeline project on the 11th of March.
This project will cost about $7.5 billion, and the pipeline on the Iranian side is almost completed. It is also agreed that Iran will construct the pipeline on the Pakistani side till Nawabshah. The total length of this pipeline will be 781-kilometer inside the Pakistani border. Pakistan will start getting the gas from Iran in December 2014.
On the other hand, after this new development the US state department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland had a regular news briefing in which she stated that if this project goes forward, the USA has serious concerns that they would impose sanctions. But the Iranian President said that the west do not have any right to criticize this project.
