Being a Muslim in UK

on Thursday, March 21, 2013

Statistics show the radical changes that have come to the numbers of Muslims in the west over the past few decades. Not to forget all that has happened amid the aura of apparent general dislike, that the western media never forgets to portray.

Talking of figures, the Muslim population in the United Kingdom alone has gone up by a multifold. For instance, in comparison to the mere 50,000 Muslims that inhabited the area back in the 60s; the numbers have now gone up to nearly 3 million! In the past 10 years only there has been an increase of nearly 1.3 million. Conversion rates have also increased so much so that the year 2011 witnessed more than 5000 people convert to Islam.

The figures above speak for themselves, but then the question arises, as to why the west would criticize Islam so much, either the criticism is false, or these figures are a hoax. Then again, statistics can’t lie; facts stay the same no matter what you do to them. The answer to the question above could be answered by one thing; discrimination.

Developments like the creation of English Defence League (EDL) are warning bells that chime every time a person wants to believe that the west is not discriminatory in general. The EDL, a league who’s motive of creation is the opposition of Islam in all ways possible (especially street protests), is one of the few things that spread unrest among all the Muslims alike. So does their affiliation with violence. After looking at their activities, like the “Shut down the Mosque Command and Control Center”, there remains no doubt that they want an intolerant stance towards Muslims.

The sometimes exaggerated stance of Muslims is one thing that clouds the mind of people when looking at who are Muslims and what their agenda is. My question now, is it really necessary for them to have an agenda? Most of them can be (and are) pretty ordinary people with pretty ordinary lives, people who have come for a better future, or who have been living there for generations –some for as long as the creation of the United Kingdom.

Looking at the Hijaab Ban issue in France, one can of course see through their apparent motive. The ambassadors of freedom should first fight for the freedom of personal choice before speaking of freedom of expression. Yes, there can be culprits in every society, but that doesn’t mean that there has to be penalization or discriminatation against every member of that society or group of religion. There has to be an equilibrium and justice before you start weighing someone
