How to Overcome Thirst in Ramadan

on Sunday, July 22, 2012

Ramadan this year is the hottest and longest in 33 years and since Ramadan came in Summer I can tell that pretty much everyone suffers from thirst if not hunger as well. The feeling of thirst in this Ramadan becomes intense in summer because of the hot weather not to mention that the period of fasting may extend to more than 15 hours a day. You have to go to work and do your daily activities in Ramadan as any other month and sometimes you cannot avoid it and lose a lot of body fluids throughout the day. However we will help you here with some tips to make you less thirsty.

First you need to understand that the type of food you eat plays a very important role in how thirsty you could get during the day. There are some types of food that you need to avoid eating and other you need to eat on Suhoor;

  • Avoid Eating Spicy Food and strongly flavored foods because this kind of food would make you want to drink more water and thirsty while Fasting.
  • Try Drinking more water after Iftar but in small portions so that you would not fill your stomach in a disturbing way.
  • Try Eating Fresh Food, Vegetables and Fruits at night and in Suhoor as they already contain water from within that would help your body get the water it need during the day.
  • Trey Eating Food that has Fiber because it would stay longer in your Valves hence less hunger feeling.
  • Avoid Adding alt of Salt on your food because this will increase the feeling of thirst.

Some People think that if they drank a lot of water in Suhoor then they will not feel thirsty but this is completely wrong because this water would be more than what your body needs so your kidney will work it out few hours after Suhoor and will not stay long as you thought it would.

Try to Delay Suhoor not only because it is best for that feeling of hunger and thirst but it is Sunnah as well and do not eat too much in it as well try to make it a light meal.

You should always keep yourself busy in Ramadan in Reading Qur’an, praying and doing everything you can to satisfy Allah asking for his forgiveness and thinking him for his endless blessing on you. You should also think about the poor people and how they are literally obligated to fast the whole year because they have nothing to drink or to eat so that means that you should give more and think about others needs even before yours. .
