Islam has contributed significantly to the world of design and architecture. Over time, Muslims have managed to construct some of the most stunning monuments and buildings all over the world.  The construction of the famous Islamic buildings began with the Arabs, who had inherited ideas from the Greeks and Romans. The famous buildings and sites that I will be sharing you include mosques, tombs and domes. Islamic architecture makes use of secular as well religious styles, all of which are unmatched in terms of the perfection and mastery with which they have been made. Below are some of the most famous architectural masterpieces made by Muslims during the course of history.

Dome of the Rock-Jerusalem

The significance of this building stems into the religious traditions and beliefs about the rock upon which it is based. The external and internal structure has been lavishly decorated with some of the highest quality marble and mosaic designs.

Selimiye Mosque-Turkey

This mosque is famously known to be an Ottoman mosque that is located in Edirne, Turkey. The external as well as the internal designs and architecture of the mosque have received worldwide recognition.

Taj Mahal-India

Known to be the jewel and core of the Muslim art, Taj Mahal is the only Muslim construct  from the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. It was constructed by the Mughal King, Shah Jehan, for his loving wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Hagia Sofia-Turkey

Formerly known to be a mosque and a patriarchal basilica, Hagia Sofia is the pride of the Turkish people. It is considered an epitome in the history of Turkey due to its massive done and dashing design. Its various marble doors, lustration urns, exotic portals and the imperial gate mosaics are some of the features that define the enthralling beauty of this building. It is a classic example of Byzantine architecture.

 Al Masjid al Haram-Saudi Arabia

Masjid al Haram is unarguably the most important and famous building of the Muslim world. Muslims believe it to be the House of Allah. It is also the place where millions of Muslims from all over the world gather to perform their annual pilgrimage. The structure has been designed in a manner that millions of people can be accommodated in it at one time. Furthermore, the interior of the mosque limits the flow of heat, thus keeping the temperature fairly cool, even in the harsh Arabian summers.

The Great Mosque of Uqba-Tunisia

Also known by the name of The Great Mosque of Kairoun, this building is also regarded as an important Islamic heritage site.
