Namaz in Islam

on Sunday, December 16, 2012

Namaz (prayer) is amongst the fundamentals of Islam, it’s regarded as one of the five pillars which lay emphasis on the worship of Almighty Allah. Namaz means bowing down, worship or prayer.

Namaz offers discipline to the Muslim world as it requires physical movement for it to perform. But those who are unable to perform it can recite into their hearts or through the signs. For this, a person is needed to be suffering from a critical physical condition such as illness.

Namaz brings the person closer to the Almighty God, it’s like a phone call a person makes to God to share his problems with Him and receive responses in return. Often, people have misconceptions about this practice, whereas it builds a spiritual connection of a man with His God. Almighty Allah is looking over all the acts and problems of His people and once the person is seeking His attention God himself lends His hands towards the person closer and faster. The major purpose is the person’s communication with Allah.

To Muslims, five prayers a day are obligatory. The time of these prayers is decided by the movement of the sun. These are: near dawn (fajaar), after midday has passed and the sun starts to tilt downwards / noon ( ẓuhr), in the afternoon (asar), just after sunset (magrib) and around nightfall (Ishaa).

While offering prayers, Muslims must maintain discipline of their speech and body language, it’s evident from the prayers that the Muslim community maintains a well-balanced discipline and bow down from heart before Almighty Allah.

The Holy Quran states the importance of Namaz and quotes

“Your Lord knows that you meditate during two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or one-third of it, and so do some of those who believed with you. GOD has designed the night and the day, and He knows that you cannot always do this. He has pardoned you. Instead, you shall read what you can of the Quran. He knows that some of you may be ill, others may be traveling in pursuit of GOD’s provisions, and others may be striving in the cause of GOD. You shall read what you can of it, and observe the contact prayers (Salat), give the obligatory Charity (Zakat), and lend GOD a loan of righteousness. Whatever good you send ahead on behalf of your souls, you will find it at GOD far better and generously rewarded. And implore GOD for forgiveness. Allah is Forgiver, Most Merciful.” Holy Quran [73:20]

Islam states that Namaz must be offered in a clean environment, and the clothes worn by Muslims must be neat and clean. Namaz is to achieve the nearness of almighty Allah and to bow down before him, worship him and praise him greatly.
