The Pakistan-Russia relationship is steadily improving; the officials from both countries have agreed to future meetings. Bilateral ties between the two countries are deepening. The Pakistan Chief of Army visited Moscow and the Russian sports minister visited Islamabad. Russian delegations will soon visit Pakistan.
According to the news, officials of both countries will sign Memorandums of Understanding. According to this agreement, Russia will invest in steel and energy sectors and will help in the development of Pakistan, whereas the President of Pakistan, Mr. Zardari, has expressed his cooperation, during one of his meetings with the Russian delegation.
Because of poor political and economic conditions in Pakistan, this agreement will help in the country’s development. Even though Pakistan is heavily funded by its U.S. ally, Pakistan is losing its influence on the U.S. because of anti-U.S. sentiments.
If we look back at history, Pakistan didn’t have friendly relations with Russia. After Pakistan’s independence, the then Prime Minister, Liaqat Ali Khan, was invited by the Soviet government, but he ignored the invitation and visited the USA instead. The relationship got even worse when, during General Zia’s tenure, the Afghani Mujahideen were trained in Pakistan to fight against the Soviet troops in Afghanistan.
The ongoing development between Pakistan and Russia can prove to be very fruitful in the coming years. It will bring positive changes not only to Pakistan but also to the whole of Asia. The agreements will enhance Pakistan’s regional trade and cooperation along with overcoming energy woes.
The Russian Prime Minister has announced to visit Pakistan for the settlement of some issues. Pakistan can get help and support to deal with power and energy crisis. Similarly Russian experts can help the industrial state of Pakistan. Russia is an atomic power and it has the latest drone technology to cope with enemies. Pakistan has good relations and connections with the USA but now there is a need to move towards Russia. The Pakistan President wants to build strong connections with Moscow. The war of Afghanistan and Russia had soured the relations between Pakistan and Russia. In this war, Russia suffered great losses due to Afghan Mujahedeen.
Now the condition has become favorable between these countries. The Russian sports minister has visited and announced some projects in Pakistan. It is a fact that Russia can help Pakistan in the energy and steel sector. The initiation of these projects will create a good impact on the energy sector of Pakistan. The steel mill of Karachi was founded by Russian professionals. But, the Karachi mill alone cannot fulfill the requirements of Pakistan. There is a need to build more factories and firms for this purpose. The progress of energy sector is not satisfactory in Pakistan at present; therefore, Russia can help to fix this problem in Pakistan.
