Strife between Muslims and Non-Muslims in France

on Tuesday, April 9, 2013

Islam is a growing religion in Europe especially France. Of the 15 million Muslims population in entire Europe, 5 million (over 30%) live in France, a demographic reality that the French people find it difficult to deal with. There are countless discussions, every now and then, on various forums citing Muslims as an “issue” or a “problem”. The famous notion of “clash of Civilizations” is especially applicable to Islam according to the western version. They equate Islam with terror and violence.

Muslims have always been considered a ‘threat’ and a ‘problem’ by the French people. Recently, the issue of the French ban on hijab stirred a lot of controversy and confusion across the globe. Another issue is the construction of mosques and loud call for prayer which is considered one of the greatest examples of the “clash of civilizations” by the French citizens. As of now, only five mosques stand in France for the entire five million Mulims, who live in Paris, Mantes la Jolie, Evry, Lille, and Lyon. The French citizens strongly put hurdles in efforts to build more. While the town mayors routinely and regularly ignore petitions to construct more mosques. To live peacefully in the country, the Muslims are pressurized to merge and defuse their identity.

France is as secular country as it can be. They applied the rule of “distance between church and state” in 1905 by banning any kind of ostentatious display of religious symbols in public schools. Although this was promulgated initially to root out the Catholic Christians, same law is now applicable to Muslims. The infamous Act “banning the veil in public space” is a clear proof of what they actually want. It is not just the government but society and white French people generally sneer at religion, and give such disturbing looks towards covered Muslim women suspecting them as a sign of violence. The underlying principle behind these laws and attitude is the historical commitment to secularism in France.

Second and third generation of Muslims suffer from an identity crisis. In France, they are immigrants, facing discrimination and unemployment, and in their ‘home’ country they are bound to live as foreigners. The Muslim population is alienated and excluded in all sorts, be it finding work, house to live or social mingling. The largest numbers of immigrants are living in areas which are ‘zones of economic and social exclusion” and have become synonymous with immigrants, extremism, rigidity and violence.

The tension between Muslims and the other French citizens is rising, and there is no effective steps being taken at the governmental level to stop this go. The recent issue of the ban on headscarf has increased the rift. Muslims are being oppressed to live according to their religion; are deprived of their due share of peaceful living and working conditions. The future of France and the Muslims in France hangs on the balance of whether the French people will allow Muslims to become a part of them. Islam is a reality; its here and Muslims should be recognized as a definite religious minority with rights and identity. It’s time for France to represent its love for human rights by taking away such unnecessary impositions, and barriers that are impeding the Muslim ideology.

Existing Relation between Islam and Western World

on Sunday, April 7, 2013

Enmity in relations between Muslims and Western public is continuing to aggravate as both sides hold negative stereotypes of the other.

There are many causes that provoke anger in relationships between the West and Islam. Large numbers of people in the west see Islam as a religion that promotes extremism, which is wrong, as acts of the Taliban and other radical groups should not overshadow true Islam. Adversity in relations increased after 9/11. In the west the stance of non-Muslims was highly hostile. Many blameless Muslims were tortured, Hijab was humiliated, and men with beard were deemed Islamic Radicals etc. The conduct of the west was also severe and vicious, as they had apprehended many innocents against whom no charges were proved. Inhuman Guantánamo Bay detention center is one of the instances of the cruelty. The attempts to inflame Muslims were also witnessed such as cases of burning of the Holy Quran by a discriminatory priest and a recent offensive film which has been filmed to insult Prophet Mohammad (PBUH); furthermore this film has been widely spread over the YouTube website causing agitation among Muslims. Drone attacks, sanctions, violating domestic laws of Muslims for ‘so called’ security purposes and apprehensions of innocents are the instances which are highly responsible for widespread hatred for the west among the Muslims.

However, problems are found on both sides since many madcap Muslims also exist who don’t have tolerance and they are inclined to handle matters with fight despite presenting any logical arguments. Imposing fatwas on the west or regarding them as hell dwellers is not the stance they should hold. There are also many radical groups who mislead other Muslims into feud against the west, misstating it as Jihad. Similarly, even in America there are Muslims who exhibit inflexible behavior in their daily lives such as Muslim cab drivers refusing passengers from carrying alcoholic beverages or drugs.

It is true that Muslims are now an integral part of western society. There are a lot of examples of Muslim comedy groups, rap groups, Scout troops and magazines. Muslims have been vocal in other forms of media as well.

Relationships can be improved with the help of media and by reviewing foreign policies. Muslim and western countries’ media should join heads and organize programs in order to eradicate misconceptions and promote peace and harmony, such as VOA (Voice of America). Both Muslims and Western public should show flexibility in attitudes by giving each other room. In Muslim countries awareness must be developed among the people that all the problems and miseries they are facing are not caused by western countries. Mostly Islamic states hold very negative stereotypes of western countries, i.e. they see America as culprit. On the other hand NATO operations in Muslim countries should be minimized to the extent of terrorists only. There have been substantial killings of innocent Muslims by NATO forces which have added fuel to fire leading to abhorrence in Muslims for western countries.

Is War between Iran and Israel Inevitable?

on Thursday, March 28, 2013

Iran has become a controversial issue for most of the European and American countries. The main reason behind the discomfort in relation between Iran and the rest of the western world is Iran’s nuclear program. Now the war between Iran and Israel is not a possibility but certain up to some extent according to the General Muhammad Ali Jafri. The Iranian general further stated that it is shameful and cancerous tumor that Israel is seeking war against Iran, but no one knows when will the war start. He added that Israel thinks that the only way to confront Iran is through war, but they are so stupid that their (US) masters should stop them.

The recent defeat of the United Nation on Iran’s nuclear program has made a significant impact on the rivalry between the two nations. Moreover, the US defense secretary told the media that Israel can launch an attack on Iran in any of the coming months of April, May or June. As we all know that the US has a strong interest in the region as this region is full of natural resources like coal and oil. The US is sharing defense strategy, intelligence and has military alliance with Israel. Moreover, there is intense rivalry between Iran and the USA over the conflict of the nuclear program.

From the statement of the Secretary of Defense, Leon Penetta , it looks certain that Israel will launch an attack on Iran, the other aspect of this statement is to blackmail or put pressure on Iran to change its behavior with the UN and the IAEA. Israel has allowed these speculations on the media that they will attack Iran, this will allow Iran to speed up the task of the nuclear program, and by this when they attack Iran, they would have full justification for attacking them.

Many political analysts and foreign advocates publically told the media that even if the USA is try to keep itself away from Israel and Iran possible war but once Israel attacks the Irani nuclear program, it will become a suicide act and the USA will no longer distance itself from the war.

No matter what the consequence will be, the USA will not be able to distance itself from this conflict, and it will have to jump in to help and support Israel at some point of the war. Previously, the Iranian generals and officials didn’t speak publically about the possible war between Iran and Israel, but now the comments from officials and generals raised the speculation of war between the two nations. It seems that Iran is ready to fight with the old foes, and they have made their mind to defend their homeland. The leadership in Iran announced publicly that the nuclear program is their right, and they will do whatever it takes to complete this program.

Relationship between Married Couples in Islam

on Saturday, March 23, 2013

The different roles and duties that the husband and wife should fulfill are clearly explained in Islam. In Islam, marriage is considered to be an important bond, between two people, that involves equal love, partnership, faithfulness, and love. There are several guidelines that Muslim married couples should follow and this ensures that their marriage will be successful, such as:-

Both, Muslim men and women, in a marriage have a role that they should fulfill. For example, the husband should be the breadwinner as he has more physical strength while the woman is responsible for bearing and raising children. She is also responsible for maintaining her home by ensuring that all the needs of her husband and children are fulfilled. For example, the husband should not come back after a long and exhausting day at work to find the home not clean, or no food to eat. On the other hand, the husband should try as much as possible to provide his wife and children with everything they need. This of course depends on his physical and financial strength. The wife should also try as much as possible not to financially burden her husband if he is doing everything he can, to provide them with their needs.

One partner should be in charge of the marriage. This is an aspect that many people don’t understand. In no way this means that one side should dominate the marriage. Keep in mind that in Islam, the husband is not allowed to abuse his wife sexually, physically, or psychologically. This simply means that one side, for example, should be responsible of the financial matters to avoid any confusion.

Mutual respect is required in every marriage, and this applies for both sides. Both of them should support each other and protect their children. This involves not sharing the secrets between them with anyone else. This also includes not saying anything hurtful to each other.

In case of children, the husband and wife together should spend time with their children. They should do everything to treat their children with love and avoid hurting them emotionally or physically. It is also recommended teaching children about Islam when they reach an age of understanding. The husband should also take his sons to the mosque when they grow up. For example, the husband should start by taking his sons to the mosque every Friday for the prayer until they reach an age where they are able to go alone. This is very important as children should be introduced to their religion as early as possible.

Prophet Muhammad was extremely concerned with the welfare and the well-being of women. He always advised followers to treat women with respect and kindness. This is very important to comprehend as many people have the misconception that Muslim women have no rights. You will be surprised when you find out that Muslim women are just like everyone else where they go to work, raise their children, love their husbands, and also spend time with their friends.

Some Major Differences between Islamic and Western Banking

on Friday, March 8, 2013

Islam is known as a complete code of life. It has everything for its followers, and it provides guidance in all paths of life for Muslims. Islam provides all the details which can be helpful for Muslims in their daily life and situations. Islam gives guidance even in money matters; this includes islamic banking.

One important concept in Islamic banking is that money cannot generate money, and it is considered as Haram. On the other hand, Interest is considered normal and right in the conventional banking. This is the biggest difference between both banking methods; there are some other differences, as well.

As it is said earlier that in conventional banking interest are charged because they say that money has a value and that value increases with time - so they charge interest. On the other hand, Islamic banking has a concept that you can earn money by using it for business or investment purpose. You cannot simply charge money on money.

The other thing is that in conventional banking, the borrower of the loan has to pay the principal interest even in case of loss. This is not the case in Islamic banking; where in case the borrower experiences any kind of loss then the bank will also share the loss by using Musharakah or Mudarbah model of investment.

The other difference between both banking models, is that in conventional banking, there is no agreement made for services or goods exchange. In case of Islamic finance, the agreement is made for the exchange for services and goods. The funds are given under the salam & Istisna Contracts as well as Murabaha.

Moreover, the conventional banks use the money as a commodity that is the real cause of inflation in the market. On the contrary, the Islamic banking focuses more on giving the loan to the real sectors which invest the money in their projects. This way money is used in a real sense and is distributed in various sectors. This investment in the real sector can form the basis of economic development.

While giving the loan, the conventional banks do not make ethical considerations. They can give the loan to anyone who fulfills their requirements. It means that they are not concerned about how the loan will be used by the borrowers. On the other hand, the Islamic banks do consider the motive of the loan. You can see that an Islamic bank won`t give a loan to anyone who wants to setup a beer factory or uses the borrowed money for any other illegal activity. This way the Islamic banking is more ethical and knows its responsibility towards the society.

So after reading this comparison, you can make your own selection of the bank from where you want to take a loan. You should also look at the policies of the banks and its effects and show your own sense of responsibility. Good Luck!

The Gap between Science and the Islamic World

on Wednesday, February 27, 2013

The relationship between the Islamic world and science is going through recent shifts. The stagnation that had long been prevailing in the field of science and Islam is now returning to the Islamic world. Before that, there had been ages in which Islamic world’s focused its attention on scientific development more than other Western countries.

During just one year 2005, Harvard University managed to publish more scientific papers than did 17 Arabic countries together. Fifty-seven Muslim countries included in OIC (Organization of the Islamic Countries) spend an insignificant amount of their GDP on scientific research and growth; it is alomst 0.81 percent whereas America has kept the greatest science budget in the world with total spending of 2.9 percent in this field.

A lot of critiques say that theses clashes are due to the aggression of Muslims towards science. This is the reason they tend to spend more attention to other fields than science. 1.6 billion Muslims of the world have managed to produce only two laureates in Physics and Chemistry, and both of them moved to the West. The one still-alive is a chemist at the California Institute of Technology. It has been claimed that this is because most of the Muslim countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and India are concerned more with false concept of learning; they tend to focus on book study rather than practical and critical thinking and analysis of the subjects.

It might be because of the traditional Islamic view that there are certain natural facts that cannot be explored and answered by science. On the other hand, the Western world attempted to reject all the superstitions and explore the natural facts on the basis of scientific developments.

However, this reason given by the critiques to explain the gap between Islamic world and scientific discoveries is not true necessarily because the situation seems to be improving. The gap that prevailed previously is narrowing down, and Muslims are increasingly contributing to the scientific world.

According to research from 2000 to 2009, the publication of scientific papers in Turkey had increased from 5000 to 22,000 while in Iran; the figure went up from 1300 to almost 15000. This increase in quantity did not lead to a small decline in quality; because the journals and scientific articles published in the Islamic world were still widely read and cited for academic purposes.

A research in 2011 conducted by Thomson Reuters, an information firm, displays that in the early 1990s other producers cited scientific documents from Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey (the most productive Muslim countries) four times fewer than the universal average. This number had increased significantly by 2009. Today, the Islamic world is flourishing tremendously in the field of mathematics papers where Iran has a good score and in other scientific fields, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are performing much better.

In a nutshell, the distance between the Islamic world and scientific publications has narrowed down greatly with the Muslims rising again and contributing in science.

Difference between a Real Muslim and a So called Muslim

on Thursday, December 6, 2012

Who are the real Muslims? Are they the once who follow the Islamic doctrines, practice sharia and are honest to the real way of living of the Muslims? It is high time you should get some senses knocked into your head. Understand that there is a very big difference between the real Muslims and the so called Muslims who have continued for a long period of time to taint the image of the true worship of Allah! No relationship whatsoever between the fake and the true Islamic religion. In fact the fake Muslims are an exact copy of a bad script where on the other side, you get a good and a learn picture of a good script- the true Muslims.

Firstly, the atheist, Christians, Hindus, among other religions should understand that Allah is the true God of Muslims, Prophet Muhammad the true prophet of Allah, and the Quran is the Islamic religious text. The 3, Allah, prophet and Quran, sets a very good platform that defines who a true Muslim is, and not some vague explanation that is meant to portray a bad picture. God himself sent Prophet Muhammad with messages and the religious texts that give a clear explanation of how a Muslim is supposed to live his or her life. And that is the exact thing that is taught in the mosque and other Muslims places of worship by the Muslim religious leaders such as the sheikhs and the imam’s.

On the other hand, there is the category of those who would like themselves to get associated with Islamic religion or those who have deflected or claims to be converts of other religions. They are the mastermind of the bad notion that has filled the whole world. Is there any single time that Allah instructed his people to kill others, shed innocent blood and participate in suicide bombing? Not even a single day! And unfortunately that is what the world has been cheated to believe, that those are no any better than a terrorist, a ruthless killer! Woe unto those who have such beliefs. As a person who is civilized, do not be cheated into taking to account that Muslims are bad people. The terrorists and so like-minded people are the projects of the evil one, the destructor who does not have the love of people in their heart. That is not a true Muslim, he is the fake one!

Did God himself not tell people to have love for humanity? What has been the message from the prophet of Allah? Is it not the work of compassion? What does the Quran have for the Muslims? Not a message of bombing, killing, abduction, rape and spreading of wrong information about others. Lack of fear of Allah by the fake Muslims is what triggers the culprits to behave in that manner. A true Muslim is aimed at seeing paradise. You cannot be a paradise candidate in your fake Muslim mind. Change for the better. True Muslims have love for all, they follow Allah’s teachings!

Relation between Quran, Hadith And Islam

on Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Islam is a beautiful religion to every Muslim. Islam guides us in every aspect of life. Islam teaches to live in peace, harmony and simplicity. The importance of Islam is described in the light of the Holy Qur’an and Hadith. Islam gives us the teaching of Hadith and Sunnah which is briefly described in the Qur’an Majeed. The relationship between the Qur’an, Hadith and Islam is very complex as they are interconnected. Islam is the only religion where different Hadith are given to the Muslims. It guides the Muslims to choose the right path in their life. If any problem arises, the Qur’an is the best source of guiding them.

The Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) by the Almighty Allah, and Allah chose Hazrat Gibrael to send down this revelation in the mid of 610 AD to 632 AD, and it is the last book of Allah which is completed and protected by Allah for the Muslims. It has 144 chapters known as surahs and verses, and the message of Allah is explained in the Holy Qur’an in a very simple language. This book gives us the message of peace and love for others. The Qur’an is a divine book for every Muslim. This book is basically the constitution of the Muslim society. It is a complete book for the Muslims where all the laws of Islam are described and the solutions to problems related to everyday life are discussed. The Qur’an helps in building up the Islamic society.

Every Muslim, having faith in Islam, recites the Qur’an daily and follows its principle in their day-to-day life.  Muslims obey the teaching of Muhammad, the God’s messenger. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) has always asked the Muslims to recite the Holy Qur’an with translation as it contains all the teaching of Islam.

Through Hadith, one can lead a life according to the teachings of Islam, as Hadith are the sayings of the Holy Prophet (SAW). The Qur’an, Hadith and Islam, all are the same but differ in some respect and have individual importance.

As Allah has said:

“And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy” (Surah Aal-Imran: 132)

In another verse, Allah says:

And how do we fulfill this obligation if not by observing what he said and did so that we may obey and follow these instructions? And are not the Hadith the collection of what the Prophet (SAW) said and did? Thus if it is compulsory for us to obey the Prophet (SAW), it is necessary for us to look at the Hadith so we may know WHAT it is we are supposed to be obeying, n’est-ce pas? “He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah,” (An-Nisa: 80)

Definition of Hadith by the scholar:

The Hadith are mainly a collection of rituals, sayings, and rulings by scholars claimed to be from the Prophet Mohammed that was recorded hundreds of years after his death. Mainstream Muslims typically accept the Hadith as another religious text paired with the Quran. However, the Quran is explicit in the fact that it was to be the final and complete text of God.

A fresh start between Pakistan-Russia relationship

on Friday, November 2, 2012

The Pakistan-Russia relationship is steadily improving; the officials from both countries have agreed to future meetings. Bilateral ties between the two countries are deepening. The Pakistan Chief of Army visited Moscow and the Russian sports minister visited Islamabad. Russian delegations will soon visit Pakistan.

According to the news, officials of both countries will sign Memorandums of Understanding. According to this agreement, Russia will invest in steel and energy sectors and will help in the development of Pakistan, whereas the President of Pakistan, Mr. Zardari, has expressed his cooperation, during one of his meetings with the Russian delegation.

Because of poor political and economic conditions in Pakistan, this agreement will help in the country’s development. Even though Pakistan is heavily funded by its U.S. ally, Pakistan is losing its influence on the U.S. because of anti-U.S. sentiments.

If we look back at history, Pakistan didn’t have friendly relations with Russia. After Pakistan’s independence, the then Prime Minister, Liaqat Ali Khan, was invited by the Soviet government, but he ignored the invitation and visited the USA instead. The relationship got even worse when, during General Zia’s tenure, the Afghani Mujahideen were trained in Pakistan to fight against the Soviet troops in Afghanistan.

The ongoing development between Pakistan and Russia can prove to be very fruitful in the coming years. It will bring positive changes not only to Pakistan but also to the whole of Asia. The agreements will enhance Pakistan’s regional trade and cooperation along with overcoming energy woes.

The Russian Prime Minister has announced to visit Pakistan for the settlement of some issues. Pakistan can get help and support to deal with power and energy crisis. Similarly Russian experts can help the industrial state of Pakistan. Russia is an atomic power and it has the latest drone technology to cope with enemies. Pakistan has good relations and connections with the USA but now there is a need to move towards Russia. The Pakistan President wants to build strong connections with Moscow. The war of Afghanistan and Russia had soured the relations between Pakistan and Russia. In this war, Russia suffered great losses due to Afghan Mujahedeen.

Now the condition has become favorable between these countries. The Russian sports minister has visited and announced some projects in Pakistan. It is a fact that Russia can help Pakistan in the energy and steel sector. The initiation of these projects will create a good impact on the energy sector of Pakistan. The steel mill of Karachi was founded by Russian professionals. But, the Karachi mill alone cannot fulfill the requirements of Pakistan. There is a need to build more factories and firms for this purpose. The progress of energy sector is not satisfactory in Pakistan at present; therefore, Russia can help to fix this problem in Pakistan.

Questioning the relationship between religion and culture (6)

on Wednesday, October 31, 2012

In the previous post, I began analyzing the Quran’s verse 14:31, in which we read: “Tell My servants who have believed to establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, before a Day comes in which there will be no exchange, nor any friendships.” In order to proceed, let me recall what I’ve wrote… “According to Edward William Lane’s Arabic Lexicon, the primary signification of Arabic root بيع (bi’), that translates as exchange – and that’s nowadays used as meaning to sell, sale or being sold - is the exchanging, or exchange, of property; or the making an exchange with property. It may also be used in relation to someone that has gained the mastery over another. As for friendship, it is conveyed by root خل (khl), that also denotes habit, custom, social behaviour – as well as the filling with holes and vinegar. The two main features of vinegar is that it’s bitter, and is an astringent agent. A substance is said to be astringent roughly speaking when it tends to draw organic tissues together, an attribute whose name derives from Latin astringo, to draw close, to bind, to tighten. Interesting though it may seem, this same verb, when used metaphorically, meant to put under obligation, which is interesting indeed, since the sense of friendship in the Arabic root appears side by side with the notion of close connection, agreement in ideas, feelings, etc. But there’s coherence here – I mean, it is certainly not a coincidence to find vinegar and social behaviour side by side, because something similar happens with ثقف (thqf), a root that is the cradle of the Arabic word equivalent to English culture (ثقافة)… the same root that, when used in relation to vinegar, means very acid… Besides this, we find one other meaning that is becoming familiar: to have the mastery over.”
I wish to expatiate a bit more on astringency, the tendency some substances have of drawing tissues together, and that has in styptic one other name. This word derives from Latin stypsis, meaning the contracting power; itself a derivation from Greek stuys, contraction, astringency. Originally, the Latin verb contraho had this same sense, that is, to draw several things together, assemble, and generally used as a synonym for colligo, from where Portuguese got coligação, similar to English coallition. These two words are commonly used in relation to the alliance, or union, between political parties, but in a wider sense they both point to temporary alliances that have come into being for the fulfillment of a specific purpose. It is interesting to know that this notion is present in contraho as well. In fact, the verb was used figuratively in the language of business to denote to make a contract. As you’ve already noted, contract derives from this same verb we’ve been analyzing. By contract is meant not only an agreement but one that is enforceable by law, which ultimately means that if one of the parts fails to fulfill it, there’s compensations that ought to be made.
The word translated as spend is conveyed by the Arabic root نفق (nfq), that tells us about that which is easy to be sold – hence, something in much demand; and this is why it is used to describe a market as being brisk . One other meaning is tunnels, that is, artificial underground passages, or channels – a meaning that seems to have derived from the fact that the root denotes the holes excavated by rats.
In the previous post, I’ve suggested looking at custom as a channel collecting water and conveying them to a single place for a specific purpose. The market is one of the best known symbols of a place of assembly. There’s many words to name it, but I wish to focus on conciliabulum, Latin name for a place of assembly, a public place – especially a place for public traffic, hence marketplace. The word is akin to conciliatio, a connection, union; a sense that through figurative use came to denote the making friendly. As for the verbal form, concilio, it meant to bring several objects into a whole, to unite – as well as to purchase, acquire; and friendly. Not all these meanings, especially not the one dealing with traffic, managed to be preserved in English conciliate, that seems to have preferred to transform itself in a synonym of to pacify. In fact, the English word is generally used as meaning to appease, to try to reconquer friendship by pleasant behaviour – so, in general, it converges to the notion of overcoming the sense of distrust or animosity. But perhaps there’s some transaction here… As I’ve said in another place, nothing is capable of effacing the traces of its own origin, and so the word does maintain the image of the marketplace… In a very subtle way, our modern way of looking at conciliation preserves the idea of a transaction that’s being made.
Let us know see what رزق (rzq) will tell us. That’s the root being translated as provided, and its main meaning is means of subsistence in general. One other meaning is a thing from which one derives advantage, which seems to be logical, as means of subsistence embrace everything having to do with food, nourishment, whereby creatures are able to subsist. And as feeding is a sort of daily obligation, the root also denotes a daily allowance of food – that is, the fixed amount considered to be sufficient for the creature’s subsistence; in other words, a daily ration. Although we do not in general pay much attention to it so natural it seems to us, the fact is that feeding is a basic act that’s common to all living organisms. And despite the fact that we tend to see living organisms as creatures, or animals, the fact is that even the sun has its daily ration of food. The same way we need victuals to keep ourselves alive, the sun is dependent on the existence of hydrogen to keep its fusion into helium. Why am I talking about the sun? It is simply to stress the idea that everything in the universe is forced to have to have some sort of energy in order to be able to hope to be present when tomorrow arrives. But the word ration inspires me something else… as it derives from Latin ratio, from where we ourselves inherited reason, I think that when God exorths believers to spend of that which He has provided them with, He is also exhorting us to think – which takes us back to vinegar… When analyzing خل, in 14:31 – “Tell My servants who have believed to establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, before a Day comes in which there will be no exchange, nor any friendships.” -  translated as friendship, we’ve seen that it alluded to the filling with holes, a meaning that is akin to something having interstices, breaks. According to the root, this fact seems to be in relation to that which is loose, unfirm, or defective, and that is why it denotes looseness, laxness. This seems to be in contradiction with vinegar being an astringent… but the point is that vinegar’s astringency is very limited, as it only works when applied externally. When in need to confine the bowels, for instance, vinegar is of no help at all, and so one will have to ingest an astringent medicine – and this is exactly what we find in عقل, a root that means both an astringent and the capacity of thinking and understanding – that is, reason.

Questioning the relationship between religion and culture (5)

on Sunday, October 28, 2012

In the previous articles, I’ve tried to show why custom seems to be such an important aspect of culture. An overview of all that’s been written shows that we may see custom as the practical side of culture, this meaning that it is directly connected with actions, ways of proceeding – or, in a word, with conduct; a general conduct followed by the majority of the members of any given human culture. In general, conduct is synonym with behavior, that is, the peculiar shape assumed by an individual, or group’s actions. The sense we tend to attribute to conduct  originates in Latin verb conduco, a verb which is interesting to observe as it will allow us to perceive the peculiar nature of conduct from one very different perspective.
As a synonym of behaviour, conduct is a word that may be used in relation to both individual and group actions. Anyway, from its very origin, the Latin verb from where it derives, conduco, meant to lead, collect, assemble together, with a special focus on the intensity of this assembling, so much so that it also meant to unite. This verb owes its existence to being a contraction with one other verb: duco, to conduct, bring forward. When used with the words road or way, it alluded to their leading, or guiding, to some place. Let us now try to assimilate these notions into our modern way of looking at conduct.
The idea that most interests me is the one having to do with conduct as a being guided along a road that seems to lead to a place where something collects. To say it in other words,  we’re invited to look at custom as being a channel, a conduit collecting water and driving it to one specific place. When looked at this way, custom seems to be much less of a personal option than of a common acquiescence to follow a way that has been previously prepared, and that serves as a means for conveying something. Please keep this verb in mind: to convey. Would you say that behavior has anything to do with transporting? If the answer is no, then think twice. The verb to transport derives from porto, meaning to bear, convey or carry along – which is also the source of comportamento, the Portuguese equivalent of English comport, meaning to bear oneself in a specific way.
Custom may then be seen as a way commonly used – a sort of thoroughfare – to convey some kind of merchandise. We still do not know what’s being conveyed, but we now know that individual behavior, as well as group behavior, is lead through that common road, which means that, in general, custom is just another way of naming a conduct to which individuals are drawn together. This kind of behavior is not the same that arises from an individual’s own decision; quite the opposite: this is the behavior following previously established roads – a channel collecting water that is not flowing freely; a conduit that will lead that water to a place where it will fulfill a purpose. If we accept this new face of custom, then we’ll have to see it as a procedure – in other words, as a series of of established forms or methods that are conducted in a specific way to achieve one specific result.

I do not wish to focus on what the result may be; but I do wish to emphasize that when one follows a procedure, that is, one is surrendering the possession of something that one owed. This is not a personal opinion. This is a fact that can be witnessed in the Latin word from where procedure derives. No doubt that procedo points to a going forwards, to an advancing – but, according to cedo, the verb from where procedo was generated, the direction of that motion – that is, the advancing -  was gained at the expenses of the yielding, giving preference, submitting to something, someone, that is superior. In English, as well as in Portuguese, the verb to cede is sometimes used as a synonym of to give up, surrender. So it seems that custom is founded on a rather puzzling scheme: the individual’s transference of a possession to the group – which is nothing more than an alienation. If I define alienation as a turning away, estrangment, you’ll probably think that I’m rendering things a bit obscure, as you not only do not see any relation between custom and estrangement – but, what’s more, they seem to be the opposite of each other… This apparent obscurity will vanish as soon as I tell you that I’m using the word alienation in its original meaning, as conveyed by Latin alienatio: the transferring of something owned to the possession of another so as to make it his legal property. We find something similar in cedo, as this was the verb used in relation to a debtor that handed over his property instead of payment. Perhaps the transference enunciated by alienatio had something to do with this, as the word was also embeded with the sense of a desertion, aversion, as well as, in relation to the mind, loss of reason. Anyway, this discomfort that shows in the word was somehow mitigated in its verbal form, alieno, that kept the idea of making something the property of another, while adding the notion of the transference of property through sale, and so nowadays, its Portuguese derivative, alienar, means to transfer to other’s possession through sale, exchange, donation, etc…  Anyway, as nothing, and no one, is capable of effacing the traces of its own origin, alienar keeps on meaning to hallucinate, grow mad as well.
We read in the Qu’ran: “Tell My servants who have believed to establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, before a Day comes in which there will be no exchange, nor any friendships. (14:31). According to Edward William Lane’s Arabic Lexicon, the primary signification of Arabic root بيع (bi’), that translates as exchange – and that’s nowadays used as meaning to sell, sale or being sold - is the exchanging, or exchange, of property; or the making an exchange with property.
Though it may seem strange, this same verb, when used metaphorically, meant to put under obligation, which is interesting indeed, since the sense of friendship in the Arabic root appears side by side with the notion of close connection, agreement in ideas, feelings, etc. But probably there’s coherence here – I mean, it is perhaps not a coincidence to find vinegar and social behaviour side by side, because something similar happens with ثقف (thqf), a root that is the cradle of the Arabic word equivalent to English culture (ثقافة)… the same root that, when used in relation to vinegar, means very acid… Besides this, we find one other meaning that is becoming familiar: to have the mastery over.

Questioning the relationship between religion and culture (2)

on Saturday, October 13, 2012

Every one of us is born in a peculiar environment, which makes us a part of the content filling the enormous vessel called culture. Like any other container, this vessel has its own shape, allowing it to differ from all other vessels. Anyway, they have something in common: each one has its own place in the planet, and if one tool existed to measure this, we could attribute it a latitude and a longitude – that is, specific numbers that would allow it to be identified, and found, in one single spot of ground in Planet Earth. But although lacking coordinates, these vessels are, in fact, like countries, with their own borders marking  the limits within which a specific identity has managed to settle itself throughout the centuries. And as no container was made to be left empty, so these vessels have their own content – a content that, as is usually the case, adopts the container’s shape. The content is regularly emptied, at the same time that it is filled regularly: everyday people die and everyday babies are born to keep the vessel alive. Like any vessel, culture embraces every single creature that is born in every single spot in the planet, no creature being allowed to be left out of this tightly closed system. Human creatures are the ones that need to be taken care of longer before they actually start to live on their own. During that period, they are in general part of the vessel’s content, and after that period, some manage to leave the vessel; and the fact that they’re at the outside allows them to more clearly identify some of the characteristic features of the vessel’s shape – and this is when questions arise; or, to say it in a better way, that is when questions are made possible to arise.

The detachment from one’s own culture is essential to being able to question it. This detachment is dependent on the existence of something that I think is of great importance: humbleness. Are ourselves, as individuals, immune to error? Are ourselves, as individuals, capable of analyzing and qualifying our own conduct, thoughts, and  so on? If no individual is immune to error, then no human aggregate whatsoever is immune to error, then no culture is perfect, then every culture is susceptible of being questioned.
As far as my cultural background is concerned, one of the things I question is the logic behind some automated behaviors that I find in Portugal. The Portuguese cultural background, to which all Portuguese are exposed – the vessel, that is -  is closely interconnected with Christian religion since the early beginnings of Portuguese history, which means that it’s entangled with the country’s own identity. And this explains why the Christian religion is still part of Portuguese culture in the 21st century – and when I say that “Christian religion is part of Portuguese culture” I want to emphasize that it permeates several aspects of peoples’ lives, aspects that because of being deemed as part of, lead to some common, unquestioned automated behaviors. Nowadays, priests are worried because church attendance is declining, but this does not seem to be an indicator that Christian religion set of ritualized formalities is being abandoned. In fact, although not considering themselves believers, young people still like to get married in churches, and when they have children, most of them are still baptized. So, basically, despite being inspired by Christian religion these behaviors don’t have anything to do with religious belief.  Maybe what I’ve just described is not happening only in Portugal; perhaps it’s present in every culture, in one way or another.

In the first paragraph, I’ve used the large vessel as a metaphor to help me share with you my perspective on culture, but I’ll now put the metaphor apart to try an define the noun culture as the term used to denote distinct manners of doing things that allows for distinction between social groups, large or small. So, if culture is a means of creating – thus distinguishing – social groups, does this mean that culture separates? And if individuals are part of strictly limited geographical groups, does this mean that culture unites?

Difference between Quran and Bible

on Wednesday, October 10, 2012

The fundamental differences between Quran and Bible are on the basis of faith and practices in both religions. The manuscript of Bible has been written by many authors as compared to Quran in which the writings show that it is an account made by God Himself. Quran is a complete book and Bible consists of 66 small books from which 18 books consist of signs of their origins because they were reveled upon some Prophet but other books had no claims to their origin. No self referencing is seen in Bible because the word “Bible” has not been used in it on the other hand Quran consists of self referencing. There are many miracles prophecies mentioned in Bible in contrast there are no miracles record because Quran is a miracle itself.

Although Quran accepts that Torah and Gospel both are the books reveled upon different Prophets but at the same time the concept of crucification of Jesus is not stated in it. According to Quran Jesus did not rise from the dead in contrast to Bible. The concept that Jesus was the begotten son of God is also a misconception that is found in Bible but not in Quran. Quran depicts oneness of Allah and accepts Jesus (PBUH) as His prophet. There is no son, no parents and no one equal to God. Bible also teaches the concept of Trinity which is understood as the father (God), the son (Jesus), and Mary.  Bible depicts that man is considered as a sinner and needs salvation which can only be achieved through faith as compared to Quran which states that man is born good not evil and if one want to achieve salvation than it can be  achieved through hard work and sincerity.

Besides these differences there are many other small differences between Quran and Bible. Some differences are based on historical facts rather than being doctrinal in nature. According to Quran Prophet Noah managed to escape the flood and his son was drowned in the flood but according to Bible Prophet Noah had managed to escape the flood with his wife, his three sons and their wives. The differences between Quran and Bible are found in their worst scenarios about Prophet Mosses. According to Quran Prophet Mosses was adopted by Pharoah’s wife but according to Bible he was adopted by Pharoah’s daughter.

Other differences between Quran and Bible are Muslims belief according to Quran that Prophet Ibrahim was offered at the altar by Abraham but Christians believe according to Bible that Prophet Isaac was offered at the altar. Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated by the Muslims on the basis of Quranic Surah where it is mentioned that after sacrificing the animal, only the dedication or godliness shall reach Allah not the blood or flesh of the animal. Bible on the other hand provides another view and it is stated that those families will escape from the judgment of God which apply the blood of sacrificial animal on the doorpost of their homes.

Questioning the relationship between religion and culture (4)

on Tuesday, October 9, 2012

It is not possible to dissociate culture from custom. The noun custom may be roughly defined as a common practice followed by members of a regional group. But this definition is insufficient as it does not include one of its most important traits: the fact that being an usual practice is what allowed custom to be an established convention. As I think that many benefits will come from our being able of analyzing five specific words that are present in the previous sentences, I’ll now invite you to join me in the dissection of the following concepts: dissociated, custom, usual, practice, and convention.

The verb to dissociate means to break or cause to break the association between two or more things. It derives from Latin dissocio, meaning to separate from fellowship, to disunite. The verb was formed with socio, to join together, to do in common, to share a thing with another; kindred with socius, partner, comrade, companion. This is from where English got associate as well as society.
The noun custom is defined as a common, usual practice followed by members of a regional group. The English word has its origin in Latin consuetudo, that besides meaning a being accustomed to a use, usage, customary manner, also denoted companionship, familiarity.
The adjective usual is applied to that which is expected or familiar as its occurrence is frequent and regular, which also pointing to what is in accordance with ordinary practice or procedure. The English word derives from Latin usus, meaning the employment of anything; experience, discipline and skill acquired by practice; and custom. Besides this, what’s really interesting in usus is that, through the idea of the advantage derived from that which is done repeatedly thus allowing for the emergence of experience and skill, the word saw its meaning being transferred to that of utility, benefit, profit, advantage.
The noun practice not only points to the act of doing something but also to an usual, customary action or way of proceeding, clearly implying repetition.
The last word of the list is convention. I’ve used this word to denote the commonly accepted procedure or practice within a group. In other words, I see a convention as something that a group has decided to accept – hence having been established not because of an inherent logic, but because of general agreement within the group. If taking a look at the original Latin word conventio, we find it meaning a meeting; and agreement or compact. This word is akin with verb convenio, to come, meet together, metaphorically used to denote the agreeing with in wishes, decisions, etc, thus becoming synonym with to harmonize. Besides this, the verb is also the origin of modern convenience, that is, usefulness, advantageous to one’s purposes, needs, etc – all meanings that point out to that which is appropriate, that is, suitable for a particular person, group, place or condition, or for achieving a particular end.
Now that dissection is concluded – in other words, now that the separation of some of the component parts of the sentences have been achieved, I’ll try to assemble it all over again.

Through custom, culture strengthens the sense of companionship between the elements of the group. Custom is the practice that through repetition by its elements comes to be usual. This sharing of an usual practice develops familiarity between individuals helping in the cohesion of the group. Besides this, the fact that the practice becomes usual as also to do with the fact that the doing it regularly ensures benefits to both individuals and the group. The possibility that individuals have of deriving advantages from an usual, common practice amidst a group, lies at the very heart of the legitimacy assigned to culture and custom as a whole.

Seen from the outside, culture is the result of a bond that has drawn individuals together. But it’s better to take a closer look at the inside, in order to understand the true nature of that bond. Our material words derives its existence from the subsistence of several kinds of forces that are able to draw distinct parts together. Nothing exists as a whole; everything is the result of a composition of parts brought together by means of forces that are immune to control. Water is probably the most incredible composition on earth: a molecule made of atoms of oxygen and hydrogen, two gases united by means of chemical bonds that give origin to a liquid whose elasticity defies all imagination. Water is seldom defined as the source of life – and I’m mentioning it because, like everything else in our known universe, water derives its existence from the existence of a means of bonding distinct, separated parts. And just as everything in the universe, in order to be able to establish themselves, human institutions are as well dependent on the existence of forces capable of uniting individuals. I use the term force as defined by physics, that is, the external influence that when acted on any object compels it to change state, velocity, direction or form. Without an external influence, individuals could be described as being inert. Once again, I’m following the language of physics that describes inertia as a property of matter defining the tendency of a body to maintain its sate of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force. So, basically, custom is the external force acting upon individuals, driving them to establish a bond based on a specific practice through which all, in one way or another, expect to achieve a particular end.

Morsi , Obama and the beginning of the political relation between the two countries

on Sunday, October 7, 2012

“Egypt is not our ally but we don’t consider it as our enemy” this what president Obama said when he asked about the relation between the U.S government and Egyptian government also president Obama said that “they are new government and they will take time to find there right way to deal with other countries this may caused a hard time between the two governments”.

The days before many Egyptians went to the U.S embassy in Cairo because of a movie insulting prophet Mohamed (peace upon him), which caused anger in 20 Muslim nations like Egypt, Tunisia and Libya.  We should mention what happened in Benghazi when a group of people killed the diplomats there, but president Obama and the U.S government take care of their speech when they talk to media to keep the political relationship between them and the other Muslim countries stable, keeping in mind that president Obama now is preparing for the elections and such this things may effect him and make Americans vote for Romeeny.

“That’s depend on how the ally mean” this was what President Morsi said when they asked him about his comment.  These words make the American citizen angry and receive these words in a negative way. Americans were unhappy by Morsi‘s reaction of the riots especially when he said” we took our time and at the end we take the right decisions”.

Morsi make Washington needs to calm down and take care of her reaction because the world changed. The Islamic power is ruling now and they came by a democratic way and this is what the U.S government understand, so they decided to show respect to them after the dictators stepped down after the revolutions in the Arab world.

Tunisians forced the old regime regime of Zine al Abidine Ben Ali to step down and Egypt got rid of Mubarak and his gang, after they remained in power for three decades and now the new president came democratically elected, which was a new way to choose the president. Of course he doesn’t need anything to please the power in Washington which makes the ideas and the way of thinking changes in the U.S government. Now it’s totally different than before.

Morsi also said “the successive American administrations that were supporting the old regime in Egypt, caused the Egyptian People to hate the way of the U.S government when they deal with Mubarak especially in first days of the 25 of January revolution. The U.S administration tried to keep Mubarak in power to serve the U.S. interests in Egypt” this was point of view of the Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi in an interview with the New York times newspaper.

Such statements from both sides Egypt and America makes the relation between them unclear because they don’t give us a direct word of anything and how they really feel towards each other, but the coming days will show us what will happened between the two countries and also the relation between big America and the Arab countries after the revolutions.

A Relation Between East And West Through Social Websites

on Thursday, August 16, 2012

Ten years before, there was not any beforehand apparatus of communication, through which people can share information, news of their religion and other relevant knowledge with each other. But in this age of advance technology and the internet, abounding amusing networking has been developed. Social networking sites are basically the platforms on which social networks build between and among people. Through these sites, people share their interest, background, knowledge and other things with each other. Basically, social networking sites are the connecting tools between and among the people of different societies, cultures and countries. The most popular social networking sites of today’s age are Facebook and tweeter. The social networking sites can also be known as social media forums. People have a general question that how Facebook and other social media forums can help to integrate Muslims and West.

This question can be answered by observing the today’s era in which Facebook and other social media forums are helping to integrate Muslims and West. Through the social networking sites, people from the different societies connect each other. By this social connection, people from the West can know about the Muslim religion, its values, customs and all other things about it. Because of these social media forums such as Facebook and Twitter, many people from the Western countries have converted their religion into Islam.

In this way, social networking websites make it possible to connect Muslims and Non-Muslims with each other. They share their interests and activities across religious, political, economical, and geographical borders. A lot of online communities have been created, which have spread the Islamic activities throughout the world, especially in the West. Facebook and other social networking tools are increasing the impact of one society and culture on another society.

We can observe that, because of the social media forums, culturization is also taking place between and among societies. The social media forum is an online platform that focuses on the building of social networks between Muslims and the West. Through emails and instant messages, one person either Muslim or Non-Muslim can better understand about the other people’s religions and his life style. It has been seen that when Non-Muslims hear about the religion of Muslims through instant messages, they find it interesting and want to enter the boundaries of Islam. They start to adopt the Islamic values, customs and other activities. Non-Muslims feel very good by knowing about the purity of Islam; they want to offer prayers, reciting Quran, perform Hajj and want to do fasting as well.

A report says that 50% western and other people regularly enter into the arena of Islam, and adore its authentic. So we can say that Facebook and other social media forums can help to integrate Muslims and West. They build a connection between East and West.   In short media and social media has a big role to play to bridge the gap between Muslims and West.

Juan Cole on the top ten differences between white terrorists and others

on Wednesday, August 15, 2012

1. White terrorists are called "gunmen." What does that even mean? A person with a gun? Wouldn't that be, like, everyone in the US? Other terrorists are called, like, "terrorists."

2. White terrorists are "troubled loners." Other terrorists are always suspected of being part of a global plot, even when they are obviously troubled loners.

3. Doing a study on the danger of white terrorists at the Department of Homeland Security will get you sidelined by angry white Congressmen. Doing studies on other kinds of terrorists is a guaranteed promotion.

4. The family of a white terrorist is interviewed, weeping as they wonder where he went wrong. The families of other terrorists are almost never interviewed.

5. White terrorists are part of a "fringe." Other terrorists are apparently mainstream.

6. White terrorists are random events, like tornadoes. Other terrorists are long-running conspiracies.

7. White terrorists are never called "white." But other terrorists are given ethnic affiliations.

8. Nobody thinks white terrorists are typical of white people. But other terrorists are considered paragons of their societies.

9. White terrorists are alcoholics, addicts or mentally ill. Other terrorists are apparently clean-living and perfectly sane.

10. There is nothing you can do about white terrorists. Gun control won't stop them. No policy you could make, no government program, could possibly have an impact on them. But hundreds of billions of dollars must be spent on police and on the Department of Defense, and on TSA, which must virtually strip search 60 million people a year, to deal with other terrorists.
