The Islamic marriage, Zawaj:

Has any one heard about the word Zawaj? Zawaj is an Arabic word which stands for marriage.  Marriage in Islam is a holy and blessed occasion. It is an ethical and moral bond between the man and the woman. Muslim marriages are performed according to the laws of Islamic Shariah (jurisprudence), and arranged by the parents of the groom and bride. The proposal made by any side, but mostly by the man’s, and if accepted, engagement takes place and then the marriage.

Apart from the wedding party, marriage should be made official by the ma’zoun (Muslim marriage official) who lets the man and woman sign in their names to make sure both sides agree on marrying each other. Both, bride and groom, should sign the marriage manuscript/ proposal in the presence of two witnesses who, then, sign the proposal as well.  After that, the celebration where people eat sweets and gather for the feast take places.

According to Islamic teachings, premarital relationships are strictly prohibited.  Marriage is a highly revered foundation upon which Islamic society is based upon. There are many differences between Islamic marriages and other religion marriages.  Muslim men are allowed to marry four wives at a time as long as he can support and protect them. However, Muslim women are not allowed to marry more than one man at a time for the sake of protecting lineage. However, homosexuality is strictly prohibited in Islam and not encouraged by all means.

In Islam, the bond between the spouses strengthens throughout the time they spend together. The true marital enjoyment of the marriage is in the qualities of sharing, mutual respect and unconditioned love. Physical relationship between them is supposed to be so private and not discussed publicly. Islam always encourages beauty and self-hygiene for spouses and, for everyone, so that they always look good and attractive. Marriage is a very important event in the life of every Muslim because it brings about happiness and love. Finally, because Marriage in Islam is very secure and bonding, divorce rates are low.
