Violence against Rohingya Muslims : Why?

A great number of millions of Muslims in Myanmar have been killed in massive numbers. The lives of those killed are uncountable. Buddhists have been long known to be the most peaceful ones. After seeing the images of the Muslims burnt alive and killed, one cannot do anything but feeling doubtful about the fact of the Buddhists being peace lovers’ community. For the month of June 2012, there has been a great increase in violence against the Muslims. Millions of Muslims in Burma have been left homeless, have been killed are still being slaughtered by the intolerant and increasingly violent Buddhist community.

Since the beginning of the violence against Muslims, no specific reasons have been highlighted for the hatred that the Buddhist community has against the Muslims. These violent episodes have gained great attention from the media and it is said that for decades, the Buddhist has always cashed the opportunity of showing that they are the majority and that the Muslims are the minority. The Buddhist community has always been outrageously angry on the minority Muslims. In these cases, it is seen that the recent riots and violence in Burma has been well planned and most of the routes are based on the planning and involvement of the Burmese government. So many Muslims are being killed and no response is being given by the UN.

The violence against Burmese Muslims are same as that of India. But, the main difference is in the case of the eruption of violence in Burma is periodic and heightened since the year 1920. The Buddhist community has grown increasingly intolerant towards the Muslims.

Most of the Burmese Muslims belong to the western state of Burma, the Arakan state. These Muslims are known as the Rohnigya Muslims. The word ‘Rohingya” is a derived word. The root word is an Arabic word “Raham”, which means sympathy. The Arabs started arriving and settling in Burma since the 8th century and Muslims settlements started to increase. More than 900,000 Muslims live in Burma under a great threat from the Buddhist community.

Religious freedom of the Burmese Muslims has reduced for many years. An increase in violence, harassment and religious intolerance against Muslims has also increased since the incidence of 9/11. Rohingya Muslims are not considered as Burmese citizens. These Muslim minorities are hated by the Buddhists. Rohingya Muslims have since long demanded for the right of citizenship. There are a number of facts that support the killing of Rohingya Muslims by the Buddhist being supported by the Burmese government.

Here, the main fact that needs to be highlighted is that there is a need to pay attention to the demands and basic rights of the Burmese/Rohingya Muslims. The international human rights councils must pay attention to an ever increasing level of violence in Burma.
