Relationship between Married Couples in Islam

The different roles and duties that the husband and wife should fulfill are clearly explained in Islam. In Islam, marriage is considered to be an important bond, between two people, that involves equal love, partnership, faithfulness, and love. There are several guidelines that Muslim married couples should follow and this ensures that their marriage will be successful, such as:-

Both, Muslim men and women, in a marriage have a role that they should fulfill. For example, the husband should be the breadwinner as he has more physical strength while the woman is responsible for bearing and raising children. She is also responsible for maintaining her home by ensuring that all the needs of her husband and children are fulfilled. For example, the husband should not come back after a long and exhausting day at work to find the home not clean, or no food to eat. On the other hand, the husband should try as much as possible to provide his wife and children with everything they need. This of course depends on his physical and financial strength. The wife should also try as much as possible not to financially burden her husband if he is doing everything he can, to provide them with their needs.

One partner should be in charge of the marriage. This is an aspect that many people don’t understand. In no way this means that one side should dominate the marriage. Keep in mind that in Islam, the husband is not allowed to abuse his wife sexually, physically, or psychologically. This simply means that one side, for example, should be responsible of the financial matters to avoid any confusion.

Mutual respect is required in every marriage, and this applies for both sides. Both of them should support each other and protect their children. This involves not sharing the secrets between them with anyone else. This also includes not saying anything hurtful to each other.

In case of children, the husband and wife together should spend time with their children. They should do everything to treat their children with love and avoid hurting them emotionally or physically. It is also recommended teaching children about Islam when they reach an age of understanding. The husband should also take his sons to the mosque when they grow up. For example, the husband should start by taking his sons to the mosque every Friday for the prayer until they reach an age where they are able to go alone. This is very important as children should be introduced to their religion as early as possible.

Prophet Muhammad was extremely concerned with the welfare and the well-being of women. He always advised followers to treat women with respect and kindness. This is very important to comprehend as many people have the misconception that Muslim women have no rights. You will be surprised when you find out that Muslim women are just like everyone else where they go to work, raise their children, love their husbands, and also spend time with their friends.
