Today the Indo-Pak region is known as the biggest security threat for global peace; it is in fact the most disastrous nuclear flash point of the world. There are a number of causes responsible for the continuous tension between the two nuclear states. The causes can include the Kashmir dispute, Water issues, border issues, Muslims’ Massacre in India, Siachen dispute, terrorism and many others. However, keeping ourselves neutral if we look at the real root cause of the Indo-Pak dispute, we will come to a conclusion that basically it is the mentality of the military in both the countries which is the biggest obstacle in the way of peace. The two countries could have resolved most of their disputes peacefully in the past but it was the typical mindset of the military that acted as the biggest hurdle on every occasion.
Both the countries spend a fairly large proportion of their budget on Military and as a consequence both the countries are among the poorest countries in the world, you might amaze that the cost of only one F-16 is equal to hundreds of hospitals or schools but instead of spending this huge money on the well being of the general public, both the countries are busy in armed race. The military forces in both the countries take funds in the name of the so called Indo-Pakistan tension. Most of this budget goes in the pockets of high rank generals and ultimately the general public suffers.
Another cause major cause of Indo-Pak tension is the interference of spy agencies in each others’ country. This also is closely related to the above mentioned cause that is the typical mindset of Military in both the countries. There is no doubt that spy agencies of both the countries use to interfere in each others’ country to serve the vested interests of a few generals. On many occasions in the past, the countries were very close to settle their major disputes but the spy agencies spoiled the whole game. The conditions are worse in Pakistan as compared to India as in Pakistan the democratic values are quite weak and Military has a strong hold in the routine affairs of the state.
Last but not least, to some extent the traditional revelry mentality of the general public in both the countries is also responsible for tension, if people have a strong desire of peace, the military can do nothing alone, for instance in Pakistan the extremist use to argue that Muslims in India are suppressed and suffering badly (to some extent it is true) and as a result that try to make people hostile against India. Same is the case in India, the extremist forces make their people hostile against Pakistan by arguing that Pakistan tries to destabilize India by exporting terrorism and things like that. Thus at the end we can rightly conclude that it is only the general public of two countries who can guarantee the everlasting peace in the region. The public has to say no to the traditional and typical mindset of their military forces.
