The Qur’an – A book way ahead of its time

on Thursday, March 7, 2013

Like any other religious scripture from hundreds of years ago, it is not uncommon to bring into question the validity of the Holy Qur’an. Most Muslims follow the book as the ultimate and final word of Allah. Those who are not familiar with the contents of the Qur’an often come to the conclusion that Muslims who read the Qur’an with such zest and enthusiasm are doing so blindly, rather than critically examining whether it is in fact the word of Allah. While it is true that most people blindly accept what they read as the word of Allah, some have read each word deeply to find proof that the Qur’an is a book that no human in 632 AD could possibly have written. Some have come to the conclusion that in terms of scientific knowledge in the Qur’an, it is way ahead of its time and that it is not possible that Muhammad, somebody with no formal education at all, could have written on his own.

Scientists were only able to prove two centuries ago that all life forms originated from water. It was proven that life began in the depth of oceans because the atmosphere had not developed enough to protect humans from ultraviolet radiation. The Qur’an, on the other hand, almost 1500 years ago, stated the following:

…And We made every living thing from water… [21:30]

And Allah has created every animal from water… [24:45]

The Qur’an speaks extensively about the existence of a water cycle that is the basis of sustainable life on Earth.

[30:48] It is Allah Who sends the winds, and then they raise clouds: then He spreads them in the sky as He wills and makes them dark, then you see the drops issue from the midst of them…

[24:43] Don’t you see how Allah drives clouds with force, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap? – then you see the drops issue from the midst of them. And He sends down from the sky mountains (of clouds) wherein is hail: He strikes therewith whom He pleases and He turns it away from whom He pleases. The flash of His lightning well-nigh snatches away the sight.

The Qur’an describes in remarkable detail how cumulus and stratus clouds are formed. Interestingly, this is something meteorologists had failed to even think of until the 1800s.

Besides speaking on the elements of nature, the Qur’an provided unparalleled information about the human fetus and embryological development at the time it was revealed.  There are a number of verses in the Qur’an that talk about the formation of a fetus.

…seeing that it is He (Allah) Who has created you in stages… [71:14]

And Allah created you from dust, then from a drop… [35:11]

Then He (Allah) made his (Adam’s) progeny from a quintessence of a despised liquid. [32:8]

…We made the drop into an ALAQAH (leech-like structure), and then We changed the ALAQAH into a MUDGHAH (chewed-like substance), then We changed the MUDGHAH into IDHAAM (bones, skeleton), then We clothed the IDHAAM with LAHM (flesh, muscles), then We caused him to grow and come into being as another creation.  [23:14]

These are just some of the many scientific teachings in the Qur’an that are unchallenged today. This kind of understanding about the world of science and biology in the sixth century, many argue, can only be explained by divine origins. Sure, humans have the ability to innovate and predict scientific theories. That has been happening for thousands of years. But to so-accurately predict a vast number of theories that most people did not even understand at the time, it would take some doing.
