Terrorism is the use of force and threats against individual people, groups, or governments, for political or other various purposes. Terrorism is not a modern activity. Hundreds of years ago, societies were not as organized as they are today with modern facilities like roads, telephone, regular police forces. Back then, heads of strong groups of people such robbers, and warriors made use of force and threats to life and property to ahieve their aims. Now, terrorism itself is quite an organized activity. There are terrorist organizations and societies which train terrorists for their purposes. Sometimes these organizations are supported by foreign governments with huge funds and modern weapons.
A typical terrorist organization usually works against the government. It tries to damage key government buildings, offices, and public places like railways stations and airports with bombs and destructive weapons. It kills people and destroys property in crowded places like market centers and bus stands. It sets the people against the government so as to gain attention. The bomb blasts, resulting deaths, and destruction in different parts of Pakistan are examples of such terrorism. A terrorism organization operating in a country usually gets money and weapons from foreign governments inside the country. Therefore, some foreign countries are responsible for terrorism in Pakistan.
Second, nations or big communities within a country use terrorist methods to gain more freedom and independence. Groups such as the Sikhs in India have been committing acts of terrorism to achieve self rule in Punjab. The Irish people in Northern Ireland have been terrorizing the British government to force it to grant them independence.
Third, there are internal or international terrorists like Carlos who actively hijack planes or kidnap important or rich persons. They demand huge amounts of money and wealth for the release of the prisoners or some political favors for the return of airplanes, passengers, or the kidnapped people. Air hijacks have been quite common.
Terrorism needs to be checked very carefully. The government should force all the people illegally present in the country to leave. It should force the refugees to remain in their camps all the time. It should make arrangements to stop the illegal flow of arms and money into the country from abroad. It should have an effective secret force or service which can report all kinds of terrorist’ plans. It may help the United Nations establish a special anti-terrorist international force. Other steps for eliminating terrorism can be discussed in newspapers, radios, TVs for the public by elected assemblies. It is difficult but not impossible to stop terrorism in the world. It is a large problem that needs to be addressed immediately.
