The Absent Ballot

on Friday, October 12, 2012

As I study the world of politics more and more, what I’m amazed by the most is how repulsed a certain crop of Americans are with the idea of voting in the upcoming election. There is a population in the U.S. which refuses to vote out of apathy – the idea that nothing I do really makes a difference. And there is an entirely different group of people who won’t cast a ballot in November out of pure indignation for the leader of the U.S.

This realization dawned on me recently after reading two articles in two blogs – the Bitchy Pundit and Black Girl Dangerous. I often wonder if people in foreign countries feel that Americans unconditionally support our leaders. I wonder if they feel like if we vote for Obama, than we are supporting the drone strikes that killed innocent children in Pakistan. I wonder if people living in foreign countries think we are satisfied with the U.S.’s version of democracy. When in actuality, that is not the case.

This election there will be U.S. citizens who will willingly give up one of their only democratic freedoms to protest decisions made by the Obama administration. They won’t vote for Romney. They won’t vote for anyone. And this is not because they are uninformed or lazy, but because they are frustrated with being forced to chose from the “lesser of two evils” as it takes form in a Republican or Democratic candidate.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that if the people of your country don’t agree with decisions made by the U.S., remember there are plenty of people in the U.S. who second the sentiment. I will be voting in the upcoming election, but there are members of this country who will not, in an attempt to say no to injustice.
