Image of Ahmadinejad physically consoling Chavez’s Mother Angers Iranian Clerics!

Iranian President Ahmadinejad has come under severe criticism from the clerics in his country for his recent controversial photo in which he can be seen holding the hand of Chavez’s mother while consoling her over the death of Hugo Chavez. The photo shows late Venezuela leader Hugo Chavez’s mother holding the hand of Ahmadinejad and resting her head on his chest. Rest of the world may consider this photo as a soft side of firebrand leader but reactions by the clerics in his country is very different. This gesture has angered Iranian Clerics who say that any physical contact between people of unrelated sex is not allowed in Islam. The defiance of Iran’s strict religious laws by their official representative has opened up a new heated debate in the country.

This incidence took place when Iranian President went to Venezuela to attend the funeral ceremonies of late leader Hugo Chavez. Iran was in very good relations with Chavez and both shared a common attribute of defiance of American supremacy and dominancy.

Many  supporters of Ahmadinejad have insisted that the image was fabricated using photo shop. This view has been endorsed by a cleric who was at the ceremony. He said that the image showing Chavez mother was actually the image of another old man whom Ahmadinejad was consoling. But many proofs have been presented, including those by New York Times, against these arguments that show that the photo was not fabricated and Iran’s president was consoling Chavez’s mother. The video of this proceeding also confirmed that Ahmadinejad was consoling Ms. Frias in the same manner as depicted in the picture.

Some religious conservatives have shown very strong response and asked the authorities to ensure that the candidate who will replace Ahmadinejad in the coming elections must be aware of the Islamic laws. According to Iranian laws no unrelated woman can be touched unless she is her as a mother of his dead friend but she does not have any direct Shari’ relation with the President and such acts are unlawful according to Iranian Islamic laws.

Iran has seen the world limelight for its strict Islamic laws since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Any deviation from such laws is not seen as a normal thing in Iranian society. But when such thing comes from their official representative, it gets greater attention from all the circles. This is the main reason behind the fact that just a picture has attracted heavy criticism.

Ahmadinejad has a repute of even not shaking the hands with female leaders of the world whenever he is in a diplomatic meeting. He may have done the act shown in this picture out of the sympathy for a mother but the clerics back in his country are not ready to buy this argument and they are coming very hot on the President.
