Topless Jihad Day

on Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Wearing Niqabs are banned in France, wrapping legislation on reproductive rights in the USA signifies that years after years, protest against Hijab, laws against veils are coming up from various corner of the world. It is like everyone gets so disturbed if a woman wears a headscarf or covers up her whole body. The new addition to this practice, a group started some protest against the Muslim Hijab and veil. It is now from Ukraine, a group named Femen, and they have declared the protest as “Topless Jihad Day”. Started on 4th April, 2013, they are supporting a Tunisian activist in this field of protest.

The Tunisian protestant called Amina Tylor is now in the hit list in the country because, last month she painted the words “My body is my own” on her bare upper trunk. Now Femen is calling on their slogan “Muslim women, let’s get naked” and the base of this fighting says ”women should not remain under a veil”. Why they should be covered all time? This practice never ensures the empowerment of women and equality with men. Femen believes, the body of a lady is solely her own, so she has the right to show up as much as she wants and no one can force her to cover her body under a veil or Hijab.

In the counterpart, a group of Muslim women decided to protest in support of Hijab and named their activity as “Muslimah Pride Day.”

But, why these two parties are fighting for Hijab? Is this a justifiable matter to fight for?

Well, isn’t it so ridiculous to think that, someone who is showing the body, roaming around naked are so much enjoying freedom, and a woman wearing Hijab is being oppressed? Freedom or oppression can never be measured on the amount of cloth someone is wearing. Everyone in this world has the right to pick how she will be dressed. Topless roaming is never supported and so forbidding someone from wearing Hijab. If on the sea beach ladies wearing bikinis doesn’t harm anyone, a lady on headscarf shouldn’t be protested from wearing it. Matters are simple, if Muslims are not calling Christian Nans to get naked, other people can’t bring protest against Muslim women to become topless. Here, empowerment and equality questions are not applicable to pull.

If someone or some groups really want women betterment, empowerment and equality, they should focus on the laws and traditions that are not friendly for women. Like in every part of the world, in Muslim or Non Muslim countries, developed or developing countries, women are suffering from poverty, ill treatment, rape, political inequality, poor educational and medical facilities and many more. If improvement is needed, change should be brought into these fields. Escaping these factors, people who are arguing on the veil and niqab are the real myopic. Only improving the education and lifestyles, cultural and political view, women can get a better life and treatment everywhere; not looking at what they are wearing or how much they are covering.

At the end of the discussion, I just wanted to tell my own story briefly. You can see from my profile picture that I am also wearing Hijab. Professionally I am a Doctor. See, my Hijab never comes in my way of profession, and I am in the highest stage of a society from my work field. My family never pushed me, and I deliberately decided to start wearing Hijab. My personal experience says, I got better respect from men after wearing it, and no one dare to behave cheaply with me. I won’t lengthy my own story, but yes, wearing Hijab is awesome and you can go any stage for your own empowerment. It is nothing related to oppression and people should stop the practice of banning or hating Hijab.
