About 65 years ago, in 1947, the United Nations’ General Assembly voted to divide the British Mandate for Palestine into two states. Palestine for Arabs and Jews got the baby born named Israel. Palestinians rejected the partition as they regard it injustice to give their native land to the Jews. Now after decades of sacrifice, struggle, constant war, international seclusion, loss of life, as well as the most important loss of land which is unbearable to digest by any country, Palestine was finally recognized as a state by the United Nations with a majority of nations votes. The status changes from non member entity to a non member observer state very much likely to be a birth certificate with happiness, celebrations and off course with lots of hopes. Out of 193 member countries of United Nation, 175 voted in favor of recognizing Palestine as an independent state, while only nine member countries voted against it.
Though most of the Palestinians assume it a cruel act to be pleased on the acceptance of only a piece of land when the entire land belongs to them, a fair statement came from the Palestinian leaders, the same quote of the famous Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, “The journey of thousands miles begins with a single step”. It expressed the hope and the aim to achieve or retrieve what they have been deprived of. The audacity of hope that one day the Palestinians may be able to get back their lands and the separated families between Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza will be reunited and true peace will be achieved without the fear of usual gun fires, missile attacks and sudden bomb blasts claiming the life of scores of people every month, injuries of thousands and fear of millions. Though the struggle of Hamas and Al-Fateh will not be quenched with this mile stone, both of these will now get better grounds to stand on. Hamas and Al-Fateh can use the platform of the United Nations for more proper, meaningful negotiations which unlike the past may be forced by the United Nations to be implemented by the Israelis.
The far dream of bringing peace between Palestine and Israel can be realized in the foreseeable future. As the peace process between the two parties go on, it is essential for the peace of the entire Middle East region that there is hope for reaching a peaceful agreement on the boundaries of the two states. It has been observed previously that though there are faults on both sides, Israel is often accused of behaving as a spoiled child of the parents who never gave proper guidance. It can be revealed by the recent statement given by the PM spokesmen that the recognition of Palestine will not refer to any big change in the ground realities. Moreover, Israel announced to build a colony of 3000 houses in the controversial area. Hamas may also act as obstinate to get all the area back, but due to recent development in the United Nations the world does dare to dream of peace and a settlement agreeable to the both countries.
