Drone shot down by Israel, probably deployed by Hezbollah

on Wednesday, May 1, 2013

According to the statement by the Israeli military, a drone was shot down by the military that was found five nautical miles north port of Haifa. The drone was tracked by the military for some time before it was targeted.

After the confirmation that it is not a friendly aircraft send by someone, F16 came into action and targeted the drone with air to air missile technology, one of the spokesmen of the military said. It is still not confirmed what were the motives of the sender, and if it was armed with a weapon or not as the investigations are still going on.

There were many speculations going about the incident as it was said that the drone was possibly sent to have the surveillance of different sites, and majorly focused on chemical sites. It was also said that these kinds of drones do have the capacity to take any kinds of weapons as they may be sent to have an attack on the Israeli government.

According to the initial reports, the drone was originated from the coastal area of Lebanon. The Israeli government said that there are higher possibilities that the drone was sent by Hezbollah, one of the organizations in Lebanon that the Israeli government have already declared as being a terrorist organization. There was a war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006.

Hezbollah owned television in Lebanon broadcasted the news about the drone attack on Israel which was then denied by the television, as Hezbollah did not take the responsibility of sending drone to the  Israeli occupied area. This incident has happened at that time when Israel is having a closer look at the war in Syria, in which it is said that chemical weapons have been used. In January this year, the Israeli military made an operation in which there was an attack to convey near Damascus claiming that there were weapons to be transferred to Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister said in a statement that whoever was behind the drone attack, it was an attempt on Israeli sovereignty, and they would be going to every extent in order to save their nation from the attacks. However, he added that this kind of actions would not be tolerated again in the future. Jonathan Spyer, a research fellow said that the drone was sent by Hezbollah, and it had something to do with the role of Israel in the Syrian war. He also added that Hezbollah has not been supported well by the Arab countries just because of the fact that Hezbollah is supporting Assad.

The Israeli officials have condemned the attack using harsh words, and it is highly unlikely that Israel would be having strong surveillance on the borders of Syria with the possibility of transferring of weapon to Hezbollah. One of the authors of the book on the war between Israel and Hezbollah said that the Israeli prime minister is having a closer look at the situation, as he is more careful than his public talks.
