Sandy: A Deadly Hurricane

on Saturday, November 3, 2012

There were many storms that affected the United States of which the most recent one was Sandy. It was the worst storm in the history of the United States. It was a tropical cyclone that affected the Caribbean, the Mid-Atlantic and the United States. Its effect also reached Canada. Sandy was the largest hurricane in the Atlantic ocean and the wind was blowing at a speed of 1100 miles. It was the eighteenth cyclone and the tenth hurricane of 2012. Estimate shows that it caused damages worth $50 billion (USD). It is considered as the second most costliest hurricane in American history. It developed on October 22, 2012 in the Caribbean Sea from a tropical wave. Then it quickly strengthened and changed to a storm. It gradually moved and became a dangerous hurricane. It moved to Jamaica and then Cuba. At this stage it was a category 2. On the evening of the 25th of October, it became a category 1 hurricane. On 26th October, it showed some characteristics of an extra tropical cyclone. It also affected Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Sandy entered the United States as a post tropical cyclone. It affected more than 24 states of United States. It brought destruction to many cities of the United States. New York City streets, stations and houses were destroyed by floods. The supply of electricity was cutoff in many big cities of the United States.

America has a history of the most deadliest and destructive storms in the world. Hurricane Katrina caused a loss of $81 billion (USD). It happened in 2005 and was the most destructive hurricane in American history.

Many famous restaurants have been destroyed by the flood of Sandy. Colombia University’s researcher states that the subway will not be open for next 21 days. A researcher also states that it was the worst disaster in subway’s history. Train services have been stopped in many cities of America. This all happened for the first time in the United States’ history. More than 5000 commercial flights were cancelled due to Sandy.

The transportation system in America is badly affected by the storm. The government is trying its best to start the transportation services again, but they are facing many problems. The intensity of the hurricane can be further understood from president Obama’s following statement:

“Transportation is going to be tied up for a long time. And probably the most significant impact for a lot of people, in addition to flooding, is going to be getting power back on. We anticipate that there are going to be a lot of trees down, a lot of water. And despite the fact that the power companies are working very closely with their various state officials and local officials to make sure that they are bringing in as many assets as possible and getting those ready in the preparation of storm, the fact is that a lot of these emergency crews are not going to be able to get into position to start restoring power until some of these winds have died down.” (President Obama)

More than 45,000 personnel are deployed in the United States for the handling of the aftermath of the hurricane. During this national disaster, the people should cooperate with the government so as to make the recovery as smooth as possible.
