The Transgender Society in Pakistan

on Monday, November 26, 2012

Whether it is in Pakistan or any other Muslim country, the transgender society has always been neglected or scorned at. Some of these transgenders are born this way, while some others dress up or undergo surgery to become one. In Pakistan, these transgenders are abandoned by their families at a very young age, so they settle in the inner colonies and are involved in prostitution to earn a living. Many of these transgenders are known by their first names only; they usually don’t have a last name so as to protect their family or they just don’t want to use it. In Pakistan these transgenders are usually seen at weddings, baby showers and post-birth events. Others are seen in clubs, prostitute houses and roads over traffic signals. These transgenders dress up as women and apply heavy makeup. Usually their clothes are tight-fitting so that they can attract the attention of men.

The population of transgenders is increasing in Pakistan; one can find them at traffic signals begging for money. Many people always give transgenders money when they bless a couple or babies. People believe that God quickly answers the prayers of the underprivileged-born. Apart from the streets these Transgenders are found at wedding and pre-wedding parties. They are usually dancing with immensely sparkling clothes on and many people are showering money over them. These dancers are also seen at bachelor parties where there are only men. Some of the men who are drunk later take them to a private place for sex.

The transgenders in Pakistan are neglected; they are seen as as an insult, as beggars or prostitutes. Many leaders of this society have raised their voices against the teasing and taunting. In recent years, this community is being given some protection. The Chief Justice of Pakistan has allowed them to have an NIC card and their rights to vote as any others. Many movies and plays have been released over this gender’s protection. There are other people who just dress up as women claiming to be transgenders; this is their cunning method of begging for money.

In Pakistan, there is no place for transgenders in educational institutions and the job sector. Therefore more than 90% of transgenders are uneducated and they are unable to read and write. Most people consider transgenders to be a part of lower-class society. However, transgenders are equal to every other human in the world and they should have equal rights. Most transgenders are born so; therefore, it is not their crime. We should provide equal rights to transgenders in all sectors of Pakistan. They should get admission to schools and colleges so that they can play an important part in the progress of Pakistan. It is reported that thousands of transgenders are present in Pakistan.
