Islamic Clothing

Islamic clothing has become quite a topic for discussion over the last few years. There are certain requirements to fulfill when it comes to clothing for Muslims, and with due reason. The dress code is there to protect oneself and the others around them from harm. It also helps to protect one’s dignity and prevent them from infatuations and impure thoughts. The point of covering for a Muslim is to obey their God, as all Muslims believe that God knows best.

When we think of clothing requirements for a Muslim, some people think that these requirements are rather extreme. But when we get to the core of the reasoning, we realize that all people, Muslim or non-Muslim should observe these factors. It does not matter which religion or creed you are, you will realize that the points I make, will affect you as a person.

Islamic clothing requirements are as follows:
1) All garments are supposed to be clean. This means that clothes are to be free of dirt and soil, but not only in the literal sense. Cleanliness also refers to the emotion one feels at the time. When wearing clothes, we should not feel arrogant, because Muslims are not allowed to look down at others. This is forbidden.
2) One is supposed to dress modestly. This means that the clothes a person wears are to cover oneself, so not to attract the attention of another. Dressing modestly means you are a quiet person and do not express yourself with loud, inappropriate actions.
3) One’s gaze should be lowered at all times. This doesn’t mean keeping your eyes on the ground. It means controlling your urges. Should such an occasion arise that one needs to lower their gaze it shouldn’t be such a problem. It prevents the person from having impure thoughts about another.
4) Muslims are not to dress like non-believers. A Muslim should be dressed in order to show differentiation. This does not just refer to Muslim clothing; it also refers to their practices, their actions and personalities.
5) Men are not to dress like women. Muslim clothing for women and men are different for a reason. The area that needs to be covered is different because their bodies are different. A woman’s status is different to a man’s. Her attire is there to protect her. The attire of a man is not befitting for a woman, therefore her requirements are separate to men. Women are not to dress like men, vice versa.

What we don’t realize is that the dressing of oneself doesn’t just refer to a person’s attire. It refers to your personality and your actions. Dressing immodestly would usually mean that you are not in control of your actions, your emotions. However, if one dresses modestly, he can control his impure thoughts and is prevented from harming others and himself. Islamic clothing is a form of protection, not just for Muslims, for everyone.
