Mohammad Zillur Rehman

Late Muhammad Zillur Rehaman was the 19th president of People’s Republic of Bangladesh. He was elected as the former president of Bangladesh on 12th f February 2009 by the election commission of Bangladesh. The political career of Zillur Rehman started in 1952 when he took an active part in Bengali language movement. After observing his dignity and interest towards Bangali language movement, he was elected as an active candidate of Awami League. After performing good for serving his nation, he was elected as a member of the parliament in the Pakistan general elections. These achievements brought lots of energy in Zillur Rehman’s work, and he actively took part in the war against Bangladesh Liberation. After this war, Zillur Rehman was elected as a member of the parliament, and became the General Secretary of Awami League. He served his nation as a minister in Awami League government between 1996 and 2001.

Late Zillur Rehman was born on 9th march, 1929 at Bhairab Thana of Kishorgonj district. He belongs to a respectable muslim family. His father, late Meher Ali Mian was a very good lawyer and worked as the chairman of the Mymensigh Local Board, and a member of the District Board.

Late Zillur Rehaman started his education at district town of Mymenshing and got his matriculation certificate from Bhairab K.B.High School in 1945. Further he passed his intermediate from Dhaka Intermediate College. He finished his master degree with honors in history. After that he got L.L.B degree from the University of Dhaka.

Zillur Rehman got married to his fellow in Awami League who was an active politician, Ivy Rehman, the women’s Affairs secretary of the same party. Late Zillur Rehman lost his beloved wife in 2004, when Ivy Rehman was killed in Dhaka grenade attack. Together late Zillur Rehman and Ivy Rehman had two daughters and one son. Zillur Rehman died on the 20th of  March, 2013 at Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore in the age of 84.

In his life, Zillur Rehman faced many hurdles and spent many years of his life in jail. During the liberation war, Zillur Rehman was kept in jail for twenty years by the government of Pakistan, and also had to lose all of his property with the cancellation of his membership in the national assembly. He faced many huge problems in leading his party Awami League. He took charge in very depressing and crucial time when sheikh Hasina was arrested. She spent 11 months in special jail, and then went abroad for 6 months. In this period of her absences, Zillur REhman kept the command, and played a vital role as the acting president of Bangladesh Awami League. In his life, Zillur Rehman got many diseases. He was under treatment of some respiratory issue, and also suffered from kidney failure. At the time of his death, his children were very sad, and the whole nation of Bangladesh was upset for losing such a great leader. May Allah rest his soul in peace.
