There are five pillars of Islamic faith. These pillars are foundation of Islamic faith and Muslims always follow these directions. One of these pillars is fasting during the month of Ramadan and allows Muslims to get closer to Allah almighty. Fasting of one month increases the level of Taqwa, self-awarenessand respect for God, in Muslims. The main objective of fasting is to prevent sins and evils. Fasting also creates feeling of sympathy for other less fortunate Muslims in the whole world. However it is important to know that not everyone has to fast. Children and older people are exempt, similarly, breastfeeding women are also exempt. Therefore fasting is not compulsory for children who are under the age of 14 years. Similarly, pregnant women or sick people are free of fasting. Several things can negate the fast and we should know about them. Swearing, eating, smoking, drinking and sexual activities negate the fast of Ramadan. Therefore it is very important to avoid from these practices during the month of Ramadan. If you commit these sins then you would have to fast for two months after the month of Ramadan. If you are not able to do this then you can provide two meals to sixty poor people. Muslims also fast in the month of Shawwal, but it is optional. Fasting makes Muslims realize what other poorer Muslims must go through on a daily basis and teaches people self control to resist their urges.

There are also several health benefits of fasting.  The detoxification process occurs in the human body due to fasting. This process destroys useless products in the body. It also eliminates toxins. Fasting provides rest and comfort to human stomach. Thus, one may feel more comfortable and easy in the month of Ramadan. Fasting is very beneficial for the patients of asthma and fever. It eliminates asthma immediately and dries the waste fluid present in the human abdomen, ankle and legs. Therefore human body becomes stable and comfortable due to blessing of fasting.

Fasting helps addictions and bad habits. Smokers may find it easier to get rid of their bad habit during the month of Ramadan. Similarly, alcoholics can get rid their habit the help of fasting. It is reported that fasting increases the performance of eyes. It enhances the color of human skin. The skin eruption and whitening of eyes is very clear in Ramadan. Therefore, Ramadan fasting is a blessing for Muslim people. It has numerous health and physical benefits for Muslims.  The obese people can reduce their weight fast with the help of fasting.
