Islam is the religion forwarded to us by The Almighty Allah through His beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH. It is a gift and a blessing for the Ummat of the Prophet PBUH. Therefore, being a Muslim we should know how the Prophet PBUH himself conducted during this Holy blissful month.
Prophet Muhammad PBUH would not begin fasting for the month of Ramadan until the sighting of the crescent is verified by the testimony of two trustworthy Muslim witnesses or just one. However, when the sighting was not possible due to clouds the Prophet PBUH would complete thirty days of the month of Sha’ban and then offer fast the nest day. The Prophet PBUH would forbid to fast a day or two prior to the beginning of the Holy Month.
The Prophet PBUH would not break his fast until the disk of the sun has not vanished and after that he (PBUH) would order his Companions to quickly break the fast. He (PBUH) would also break the fast before Maghreb Prayer with fresh dates. He (PBUH) would break his fast with fresh dates. If the fresh dates were not available then he (PBUH) would use old dates and if old dates were not available the he (PBUH) would break the fast with water.
When he (PBUH) would travel in this Holy month, he would either fast or beak the fast and the Companions would choose either one of the two. This was not from his (PBUH) practice to estimate the distance in a journey to break the fast. When his (PBUH) Companions would go on a journey, they would break their fast without even having stepped outside their homes as they informed that this was his (PBUH) Sunnah.
The Prophet PBUH would eat dates Suhoor and would urge his (PBUH) Companions to take Suhoor if it is just a sip of water. He (PBUH) would delay the Suhoor shortly before the Fajr Prayer.
It was the practice of the Prophet (PBUH) to pour water on the head during fasting due to heat or thirst. He (PBUH) would also use the Miswak while fasting and he (PBUH) would wash his mouth and nose while fasting but not too deep.
The Prophet PBUH would lead his Companions in the Taraweeh prayer and would not go beyond making eleven Rak’aat, whether in the month of Ramadan or any other month. The Prophet (PBUH) would offer ‘Itikaaf during the last ten days of the Holy month of Ramadan and would only offer it while fasting and begins his (PBUH) ‘Itikaaf after saying the Fajr Prayer in the Mosque. He (PBUH) would set up a tent and would take is bed there and would only allow some of his (PBUH) wives to visit during ‘Itikaaf and would not be intimate with them by kissing or anything else and would depart them from the door of the mosque and would not go outside the mosque unless he (PBUH) had some humanly need.
It was his (PBUH) practice to give the Zakat-ul-Fitr, a day or two before the Prayer of Eid-ul-Fitr and to give it particularly to Masakeen (the needy). The Prophet PBUH would also appoint someone from his (PBUH) Companions to collect and guard Zakat-ul-Fitr.
May Allah Almighty allow us to follow The Prophet’s (PBUH) path. Ameen
