Arson attack on mosque in Condé-sur-Escaut

on Sunday, September 16, 2012

There has been a new attack on a place of worship. According to the CFCM (French Council of the Muslim Faith) the mosque at Condé-sur-l'Escaut in northern France was the victim of an arson attack on the night of Thursday-Friday 14 September.

As is often the case with acts of vandalism committed during the night, it was when worshippers arrived for the Subh prayer, before dawn, that two outbreaks of fire along with the remains of two fuses were discovered. The damage could have been serious. Only the handles of two windows were burned, the CFCM reports.

A complaint has been lodged by the Errahma association that manages the mosque.

In a statement published on its website the CFCM "repeats its call for the establishment of a parliamentary commission of inquiry" which would result in "concrete proposals to ensure the security and protection of places of worship".

In ten days, six Muslim places of worship have been the object of attacks. On the night of 5-6 September, there was one of neo-Nazi graffiti and a swastika on one of the walls of the mosque at Agen. Three days later, two places of worship at Épône in Yvelines were desecrated. Last weekend, for the third time in two months, the mosque at Barp, south of Bordeaux, was desecrated. On Thursday 12 September we learned that the door of the mosque at Limoges had been covered with excrement.
