Have you ever wondered about the relationship between the two largest religions of the world; Islam and Christianity? Although presently the rift between the two religions seems to be beyond repair, but it would be surprising to know that how great the similarity and connection between the two monotheistic religions. These two religions follow the same baseline that reflects the belief in one God. The founding principle of both these religions is same, but there are some differences between them as well which have increased by the passage of time. The similarities will be discussed first.
Prayer is there in the bible as there in the Quran. They are universal prayers for the followers of these two religions. After careful observation, it can be seen that prayers of both religions carry the same meaning with only slight differences.
Both Muslims and Christians recognize Jesus. They believe that Jesus was sinless and the son of Mary. They also believe that Mary was a Virgin and it was a miracle from God to give her a son. Islam and Christianity accept that Jesus preformed miracles and was crucified and raised up to God, and he will reappear in this world. But they have some differences as well regarding Jesus. Some Christians claim that Jesus was the son of God whereas Muslims have a belief that he was just a prophet of God like many other prophets.
Islam and Christianity both believe in the concept of the doomsday. Both are united on the fact that the existence of this world is finite, but it is not known when is the end of the world. Jesus or the Christ will be back by the world ends and at that time Satan and his servants will be defeated. After death, those who do good deeds will go to heaven forever, while men with bad deads will go to hell and punished.
In the Holy books of both religions, the creation of this world and man has been described in the same manner. Both say that the world was created in six days and man was created from the dust of the ground, and God breathed spirit and life in him.
The major difference between both of these religions is that Muslims believe in God, whereas Christians believe in trinity, meaning that God has three forms (Father, son, Holy Ghost/Spirit). The concept of the trinity was not adopted by Christianity until the Council of Nicea in 325 AD. The early Christians were Unitarians and until today, some churches do not accept the trinity.
Notable Rationalist Unitarians include thinkers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson (American), scientists such as Isaac Newton (British), as well as famous figures such as Florence Nightingale (British) in nursing and humanitarianism, Charles Dickens (British) in literature, and Frank Lloyd Wright (American) in architecture. Whereas Islam totally rejects this concept of trinity, and there is only one God who is worshipped. Jesus was neither God nor son of God; he was only the prophet of God chosen among the Human beings.
According to Islam, Jesus did not die on a cross. Most Christians today insist that Jesus was crucified and died on the cross, and was resurrected two days later.
Christians believe in the concept of “Original Sin” which means that, human beings are born as sinners, bearing the burden of the “Original Sin” of Adam and Eve which is not in Islam.
