Kohistan is a mountainous place with a lot of natural beauty and scenery. Sad news comes from that area in June about a dance scandal video which took the life of four women and two brothers. In this video two brothers were dancing on the wedding of their relative, and women were clapping to the dance to appreciate them. This act is considered as shameful and illegal in that area and the local leaders gave them the death punishment for dancing at the wedding ceremony. Four women and two young brothers were killed for this act.
Local religious leader Allama Javed Azad told that he has not issued any Fatwa (decree) to kill these people. He further told the media that he didn’t even watch the video. He told media that, he swore to the Quran that he hadn’t gotten any evidence or watched any videos related to the wedding dance. This act was just to defame the local leadership and they had nothing to do with this issue.
The district coordinator told media that this fatwa was given just to create a sense of anger among the people, and some people want to destroy the peace in the valley. The police were sent to the area to investigate the issue and to find out if this news was true or not. The Member of Parliament told media that he himself is a Mufti, and no one can issue death sentence by watching this dance video.
This conspiracy didn’t end here, after several months of investigation, police were unable to find the culprits involve in this incident. People think that this issue was raised to disturb the peaceful environment and to defame the religious leadership. There is something more interesting in this case. After six months, Afzal and Gudar, two brothers that have been sent to jail on release of this video were bailed out.
Last year, three boys were killed in a rivalry in Kohistan. The family of boys who were killed told media that people from other tribes (tribes of girls that have been killed earlier) have took action against their boys. The police have taken action against the tribe and started their investigation.
If this video is true, is it right to kill people for dancing? Islam doesn’t allow the killing of innocent people. This whole plan is to defame Islam, but unfortunately these people are considered extremists, and they have nothing to do with Islam. The tribal traditions need to be changed, or we may witness many more honor killings. According to a human rights report, many of the honor killings are of women and innocents, which is something the government needs to eradicate.
