Smiling IS Charity

Brussels, 4 June 2012,
What a rainy cloudy morning. That morning I did not feel so well, I stepped out unenthusiastically. Bismillah.

planned to go to a friend´s home, as every other Mondays, to learn and practice sewing. I passed the night before doing homework and didn´t sleep well, made me feel fatigue in the morning. As I opened my eyes, I said, “And where is the sun to lighten my day?” Oh, noon….it was so cloudy! I was trying to say to myself, “Well, just go and enjoy the day”. But I was not sure.

I missed the bus! Oh…..My God! The fatigue was completed. OK, well…rainy, cloudy summer and waiting for the bus…for the next 20 minutes!

I was unhappy…really unhappy.

Suddenly, a smiley old woman come to me and say, “Bonjour”. MashAllah…
Her smiley face, took me out of my unhappiness. I said to myself, “ She is old, she is weak, but she faces the cloudy and rainy day with her smile”. Shame on me who can not just say “Alhamdulillah, thanks God” and bright the day with a smile”.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Charity is prescribed for each descendant of Adam every day the sun rises.” He was then asked: “From what do we give charity every day?” The Prophet answered: “The doors of goodness are many…enjoining good, forbidding evil, removing harm from the road, listening to the deaf, leading the blind, guiding one to the object of his need, hurrying with the strength of one’s legs to one in sorrow who is asking for help, and supporting the feeble with the strength of one’s arms–all of these are charity prescribed for you.” He also said: “Your smile for your brother is charity.” – Fiqh-us-Sunnah, Volume 3, Number 98
