ETHICS OF DISAGREEMENT IN ISLAM

on Sunday, June 24, 2012

Each one of us belong to different communities and different ethnic groups. As we are different from each other in one way or the other reason that’s why we have different opinions even regarding a single point. We have our upbringings in different setups and belong to different backgrounds. So we have different opinions; beliefs and point of views. We have gained education in different setups and have different levels of education and use different languages as medium of communication so with so many difference it is quite impossible to stand at single point with same opinions when at the same time we know that difference in viewpoints and disagreement is natural human phenomenon.

We have set of disagreements in each and every field our life. Unfortunately we have disagreements and conflicts even in our religion. And this not something newly introduced rather it is the problem that was even present from the time of the Sahabah. However, at that time those have respect for each other and they never denied each other and have respect for ideas of one another as have for their own selves.

There are basically three types of disagreements that may arise and are given as: IKHTILAF; a kind of disagreement among people when they genuinely don’t agree at some issue. JADAL; a kind of argument done by people when the aim is just to win the argument and prove others wrong & SHIQAQ; the worst type when people have no space at all for others opinions and their beliefs are exclusive.

The different reasons due to which there occur disagreement in religious issues. These may include:

Lack of knowledge among people talking about particular thing so before you are going to discuss something and argue do have adequate knowledge as Islam is quite simple and quite easy to understand so just learn Islam thoroughly before indulging into an argument regarding it.

As we know Quran and Sunnah have been revealed in Arabic language so sometime it become difficult for people to understand what is written in them. So it is must to learn Arabic language in order to understand Quran and Sunnah. Some people even stress on learning of Arabic as they believe is language of Muslims and must to be Muslim it is important to learn Muslim language. However, it is necessary to learn Arabic if you want to learn Islam as most of the details regarding Islam is available in this language. Although these have been narrated in other languages but this give rise to disagreements as perceived by people in different ways.

People also have disagreements regarding rituals and customs in Muslim culture. For that what is required is to have adequate knowledge in this regard and they should first learn Muslim culture and then go for preaching or argument with others.

These disagreements in different issues may arise because of the difference in study pattern of Islam from different institutes. There are so many different Muslim academies providing teaching of Islam.  However, each Muslim academy is giving right teaching at its place. But the need is to give respect to ideas of each other rather than going for arguments with one another.

As mentioned earlier these and lots of other disagreements were there even in the time of the Sahabah, but they never argued with each other as they give respect to one another. No one can have complete knowledge about each and everything so one should not consider that he is exclusively right and should listen to others and respect them. Even in Islam this point has been stressed not to go for arguments and stop the discussion as it goes in wrong direction.
