There is a huge misunderstanding and false accusations against our Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) concerning the fact of marrying A’isha while she was still so young. They accused him of being a sex-maniac who is only driven by desire, a womanizer and a Don Juan, whereas the truth is that the Prophet Muhammad is the most respectable man in the world. Some orientalists are considered responsible for this misconception as they hide a great amount of the truth while shedding the light upon one part of it to confuse non-Muslims. In fact, there are more than one reason behind this marriage, which makes it one of great importance to every Muslim afterwards.
One of the main facts that are, sometimes, deliberately hidden when it comes to the Prophet’s (PBUH) marriage to A’isha, is the cultural side i.e. the nature of the people who lived at that time. It was customary of young girls to get married to old men, so, the Prophet was neither the first nor the only one who did so. Plus, little A’isha was already engaged to someone else, but she broke with him after she had embraced Islam. Thus, there was no problem for her at all. It is even mentioned that, after marriage, she used to play with her friends, and they visited her at her home which means that she led a very happy and normal life after marriage.
Also, women at that age used to reach puberty early, so, A’isha was mature enough when she got married to the Prophet (PBUH). However, today, girls normally reach puberty at the age of 12, or 13 and get married at the average of 19 or 20. So, using the norms and laws of today’s life to judge the past is totally irrational and mean.
Another important fact I thought is worth mentioning is that the first marriage of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUB) was to Khadija who was older than him by 15 years. He was still 25 by then, so, he could have married a beautiful woman of his age, however, he did not marry another one until Khadija died. This proves a lot about the modest nature of Mohammad (PBUH).
Marrying A’isha was one of the most critical decisions that Allah has inspired the Prophet Muhammed to do. She was well known for being extremely intelligent who has a mind like a sponge. When the Prophet Muhammad died 8 years after marrying A’isha, people used to resort to her to ask about Islamic laws and tips about everyday life problems. It was even said that the knowledge of A’isha alone outweighed the knowledge of other wives of the prophet combined. She was responsible for delivering nearly a quarter of the Sunnah that people make use of in leading a better life. It was said, too, that she was the best in medicines, poetry and Islamic jurisprudence.
Finally, a woman like A’isha, who was extremely smart, and eloquent would not have reached this level unless she spent a great deal of her life in learning from the greatest Man on Earth, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This proves that she loved the Prophet so much that she memorized everything he said and did. In fact, she was and still is the role model of all Muslim girls and women.
