Love Marriage in Islam

on Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Islam is undoubtedly a religion based on nature. It recognizes every legitimate human need and acknowledges it. Islam realizes the requirement to get shelter, food and clothes; and thus permits Muslims to work hard for their earnings. In the same way, our religion identifies the human need to get married and have a family; therefore Islam permits rather orders Muslims to get married. Marriage is indeed an essential social institution as it lays down the basis of a healthy and constructive community.

But is it allowed for Muslims to choose their life partner on their own? Are they permitted to love someone and afterwards get married to him? This is indeed a tricky question, as well as, one of the most frequently asked questions by Muslim youth.

First of all, we must realize that in Islam, there are certain boundaries that curtail needless communication between males and females. Allah addresses the Mothers of Muslims (Wives of Holy Prophet PBUH) in Al-Ahzaab:

“O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allah, then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.”

This is just not an exclusive order for Mothers of Muslims, but it is a guiding principle of ethics and morality for all Muslim women.

Allah orders Muslim men and women to “lower their gaze” in order to promote chastity in the society. The same way, Allah has ordered Muslim Women to cover themselves when they go out. Allah orders in Quran:

“O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of ‎the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) over their bodies (when outdoors). That is most convenient that they should be known and not molested.”

Think for a while: If we were truly acting upon these principles of Allah, was there any chance for men and women to intermingle and hence, like each other? The kind of love marriage, which is a norm these days, is based on meetings, parties, exchange of messages, social media, and phone calls. Such a relationship before marriage is, by no means, permissible in Islam.

Islam provides both men and women with the right to show their consent for marrying someone. It certainly does not imply Allah’s permission to court and date a girl.

However, we have to look at our society and the era we are going through. Co-education right from the beginning of one’s schooling till university level, mixed functions, free correspondence with each other, the concept of “being friends”, no concept of hijab in the majority of population, and availability of phones and personal computers has entirely altered the morals and ethics of Muslim society. We can clearly see a huge and deep impact of western media on their lives; following metal singers and rappers, getting inspired by actors, and idealizing teenaged musicians are few prevalent traits.

Keeping the above said things in our minds, we can very well understand that it won’t be surprising to find out such young Muslims falling in love with each other. Here, I would assert that parents have a huge role in shaping up what comes next.

Respected Parents: If your kids like each other and want to get married, kindly do not overreact. Do not tell them that they need to get a degree yet and have to stabilize their lives first. Please get your concepts straight and go through Allah’s rules regarding marriage once again. He has ordered His followers to get their children married as soon as they become adults. Be thankful to Allah that your kids are not getting involved in illegitimate relationships and have rather come to you for help. Best way to handle the matter is to get them married to each other. Anyhow, this does not mean that you have to get them married even if you find flaws in their choice, or the reason of their choice. You have all the authority of parenthood to exercise.

Though there is no concept in Islam for such a love marriage because Allah has strict rules of Hijab and segregated get-togethers. However, in today’s era parents must listen to their kids’ need of getting married to the person of their choice; but only after ample scrutiny.

In the end, I would like to suggest something to parents. When Allah has told us that girls/boys are perfectly ready to get married; it means that they actually are! They might still be kids in your eyes; you might feel they act childish usually; but do not forget that Allah knows better than you do. Puberty brings all the natural needs and drives along which, when there is no legal way, forces young kids to involve in illicit relationships and unethical acts.

Therefore, kindly think what you are doing to your kids for not getting them married at the age Allah has prescribed for them. When you’ll get them married at that age, there will be no room for any illegal/Haram act. Please, protect yourselves and your kids from the vices that are the outcome of late marriages.

Importance of Marriage in the Muslim World

on Monday, April 1, 2013

Just like any other religion, Marriage is very important in the Muslim world so both genders men and women can procreate, stay away from sins, and live a peaceful live. The word marriage in Islam is referred to as ‘’Zawaj’’. There are rules that regulate the family relationships and basics in Islam and this ensures that all members will live without many problems. Whenever a problem takes place between them, they can go back to these rules to figure out what should be done. In Islam, marriage is considered to be completely half of your religion because it shields from promiscuity, homosexuality, and fornication. In Islam, these issues are said to result in other problems such as homicide, slander, property loss, and family disintegration.

Marriage Conditions:

Married Muslims should not be married against their consent and should be of an appropriate age. It is recommended that the woman should be eighteen years or older, so she is able to serve her husband and household. This issue has caused a lot of confusion in the world but Muslim parents who force their children into marriage are acting against the rules of Islam. This is usually due to lack of education or culture and Muslim people all over the world have opposed this several time. Also a Muslim wife shouldn’t be forced during sexual relationships, according to Islam. This actually has a high importance in Islam as the woman can actually ask for divorce, if her husband is asking her to have sex with him by force or without her consent. The divorce will take place even if the woman has children as this is a very serious case in Islam. A Muslim woman is not allowed, in any way, to engage in sexual relationships with her soon to be husband.

Men shouldn’t be married unless they are able to support their wives and children completely. A woman who is divorced, widowed, or married previously should wait for three complete months until she can get married again. In all cases, a Muslim woman who is pregnant will have to wait until she gives birth to the child so she can get married again. This is mainly to ensure that the women can start a completely new life with her husband.

A Muslim man should never marry his step-mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and mother, sister of his mother or father, or any woman related to his wife. This is perhaps similar to other religions such as Christianity where a man is also not allowed to marry his daughter or mother. In the world of Islam, marriage is a very important event that represents social and loving relationships between both partners. Muslim married couples enjoy their life by extending their family, by having children and continuously strengthening their relationships. The conditions of marriage in Islam aren’t complicated whatsoever, and if they are followed precisely, everything will go smoothly before the marriage takes place and during it. There are also regulations in Islam that explain how married couples should treat their children.

The marriage system of Islam

on Friday, February 22, 2013

As you begin understanding Islam more, you will begin discovering that is a beautiful religion that provides its followers with guidance for every aspect of their life. You’ll also find instructions about marriage in the Qur’an and sayings by the holy prophet, known as Hadith.

There is no doubt that marriage structures are an essential unit of our society and the foundation of creating a family. Healthy and happy families are needed for the preservation of our race in a cohesive manner. Marriage in Islam also has moral, psychological, social, and spiritual benefits.

The Holy Prophet explained:

Marriage is my practice and precept. Those who don’t follow this practice aren’t following me.”

And

“When a Muslim man has finally married; he has fulfilled half of his Islam religion.”

Marriage is very important for every Muslim, and there are responsibilities, goals, and structures for both partners. This will provide the married couple with information and peace of mind about everything they need to know, especially when there is a problem in their marriage. There are three main reasons why Muslims get married and they are:-

It is essential to understand that a critical moral value in the Muslim world is chastity; purity of individuals and society. In Islam, marriage protects the man from natural urges whether they are physical or emotional. Fulfilling uninhibited physical desires aren’t permitted in any way by adultery or fortification which are some of the greatest sins.

Also, a man who practices Islam shouldn’t marry a woman to fulfill his sexual or physical desires only. He should do so with the intention of taking care of a women and providing her with everything she possibly needs. This is the main reason why a legal contract is signed during Muslim marriages. Keep in mind that sexual relationships before marriage are not permitted for both the Muslim men and women.

In Islam, building a successful marriage entitles selecting the right wife or husband. The selection should be done with the intention of spending the rest of your life with the same person. Some of the factors that are taken into consideration when selecting a life partner is the background of the family, partner’s age, education, or interests. Even though, some Muslim marriages are arranged, many of these marriages have proven to be very successful. Time has changed now and many Muslim people are beginning to choose their partner themselves.  It is against Islam to force a woman to marry even if the marriage is arranged.

There are important prohibitions when it comes to marriage in Islam. There are some women that a Muslim man is forbidden to marry such as his mother, sister, aunts, and nieces. A Muslim man is also not allowed to marry two sisters at the same time. Marrying an idolater in Islam is also completely forbidden.

Has any one heard about the word Zawaj? Zawaj is an Arabic word which stands for marriage.  Marriage in Islam is a holy and blessed occasion. It is an ethical and moral bond between the man and the woman. Muslim marriages are performed according to the laws of Islamic Shariah (jurisprudence), and arranged by the parents of the groom and bride. The proposal made by any side, but mostly by the man’s, and if accepted, engagement takes place and then the marriage.

Apart from the wedding party, marriage should be made official by the ma’zoun (Muslim marriage official) who lets the man and woman sign in their names to make sure both sides agree on marrying each other. Gay Marriage has Muslim Approval?

on Tuesday, December 11, 2012

The use of inflammatory words by the Union of Islamic Organizations in France (UOIF) in response to the approval of gay marriage has not gone well with the people of other communities. Islam theoretically allows freedom of all beliefs without emphasizing oppression, but some of the extremist Muslims have condemned same sex marriages.

But later, it appeared from sources that the French government spokesperson Najat Vallaud-Belkacem has condemned the news, denying it greatly. The UOIF also added that everyone should understand “the consequences that it could have on society, if this new form of marriage and parenthood is legalized. The President François Hollande’s government has recently drafted a bill on “marriage for all”.

Over the years, the Muslim image has declined due to their violent behavior and outrageous comments, portrayed through the media. Part of the Muslim community felt that it was unnecessary to approve gay marriage. The news was although cleared by a representative, but the truth can’t be denied.

In a recent poll in U.S, a un-expected number of approval came from the Muslims as a surprise in the Referendum 74 campaign. Preserve Marriage Washington, which is seeking to repeal the gay-marriage law with backing from the National Organization for Marriage, was reporting 127,211 signatures — 6,634 names more than the minimum required to qualify for the ballot. Organizers need to get, and the Secretary of State encourages, at least 150,000 signatures to ensure a sufficient number of them are from qualified registered voters.

“The number is changing daily,” campaign manager Joseph Backholm said. “It’s now only a question of whether we’ll have time to count them all and stick the number on our website every day.” (ST, 12)

On the other hand, some of the Muslims have passed statements which have revolted many souls, Habib Khan, salesman, says, “It’s pretty clear from an Islamic perspective we have to support this issue because Islamic marriage is between a man and a woman,”

Backholm said Muslim leaders took the initiative and reached out to the Ref. 74 campaign, requesting thousands of petitions to be circulated in their mosques, and offering to work in a partnership through November.

“Christians and the Muslims have not always worked that well together,” he said. “Here is a place of commonality. We are building bridges.”

According to Muslims, Islam permits marriages between the two respective genders, but not between the same sexes, it is difficult to accept something beyond one’s code of life. The legality of gay marriage in France; therefore, gathered all kinds of opinions from the Muslim community. A substantial amount of people vented unhealthy views over allowing the marriage, but at the same time, a particular group of Muslims considers it valuable. Islam permits the freedom of all expressions of all believers, so Muslims are bound to accept the legality of gay marriage in not only France, but in the rest of the world. France will allow gay marriages from 2013 onwards.

The importance of the marriage

on Monday, September 10, 2012

Islam is a wholesome religion, it is the most pure and complete religion. Islam gives importance to even aspect of life even if it is a minor aspect. Islam has guided Muslims about how they should live their lives so that they can acquire heaven in the life hereafter. Islam is an old religion but it sheds life and provides guidelines for Muslims and even for non Muslims of every era. From the smallest aspects like eating, drinking and sleeping to the greater aspects like doing business and marriage, Islam provides information and a right path to do everything. It has been given a lot of importance in the teachings of Islam that Muslims should strictly follow the guidelines laid down for them in Quran and Sunnah so that they do not harm themselves or others.

Islam has provided the guidelines for Muslims about marriage. Marriage is given a lot of importance in Islam and it is considered as a sacred bond between the husband and wife. The relationship of husband and wife is given a lot of importance and husbands and wives are asked to give utter importance to each other. Wives and husbands are given rights and they have obligations towards each other and towards their family.

Husbands are strictly forbidden to degrade or mistreat their wives. Husbands should not be tyrant and they should love and care for their wives. Husbands are to consider it their foremost duty to ensure the safety of their wives and children and to fulfill their righteous wishes. Husbands are to be fair with their wives and they should be treated with patience and love. Husbands are given the duty to be the head of the house and to run the house with care and responsibility. Husbands should ensure that their wives are acting in accordance to the teachings of Islam so that they can go to heaven. Husbands should teach their wives if they are ignorant to the teachings of Islam.

Wives are given numerous rights in Islam along with a share of property of husband. Hence they are asked to be nice to their husbands and to stay patient at bad times especially if husband and the household are facing financial crisis.  Wives are asked to be obedient towards their husband. Wives are to support their husbands morally and emotionally at all times and same is expected from the husband.

Both the husband and wife are forbidden to cheat in their relation. A woman who is a wife of a man is not allowed to marry another man. But a man who is a husband of a woman is allowed to marry three other women. He is allowed to marry other women but under strict conditions, he can’t marry another woman while his first wife is unhappy with this decision of her husband. Husband has to be completely and absolutely fair among his wives. And none of his wives should feel lowly about his decision.

Marriage Traditions in Islam

on Saturday, July 7, 2012

Many people born into Muslim families, understand when a Muslim woman gets married she has to take her husband’s surname. However when we learn about Muslim culture or for that matter the non Muslim culture as well, we tend to realize that this is a totally UN-Islamic tradition that people carry out.

Before delving into this matter in detail, it’s essential to understand that under Islamic ruling our children should be named according to our parents for instance if a child is named as “X ibn Y” (ibn means son of) or “X ibnatu Y” (ibnatu means daughter of), it becomes even more clearer that it’s not possible to rename a woman using the name of her husband after marriage. However this pathetic situation that we are facing nowadays has led to even surprising our younger generation with this UN-Islamic culture! Due to this, it has become a serious issue nowadays and if we do not take the necessary actions to rectify this situation it would lead to complete destruction of the Sunnah (i.e. the lifestyle of the Prophet Muhammad).

Due to the gradual removal of the above Islamic etiquette of naming a child, and the lack of knowledge to learn Muslim culture the woman has also being taken into the Western and non Muslim philosophy of taking the husband’s name after marriage. Allah says in the Quran, Surah Ahzab verse 5, “Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah. But if you do not know their fathers – then they are [still] your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended. And Ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful”

Also there is a hadith that is narrated in both Bukhari and Muslim which reads, “On the Day of Resurrection, each betrayer will have a banner raised beside him, and it will be said, this is the betrayer of So and so the son of So and so.” This hadith also further emphasizes on the fact that Islam gives the children as the caretaking of the father even after a woman gets married. This is because the father is responsible for maintaining the child and his mother both outside and even inside the household. Also the fact that the father takes the means to mix with people in the marketplace and undertake several risks in order to earn a halal living for his family and for the sake of Allah. Therefore the children are given the name of their father with respect to this and not of the mother because Allah said in the Quran in Surah Ahzaab verse 33, “And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves”

Furthermore by analyzing the above verses and hadith more carefully it could be understood that there is no connection or no blood tie with the wife and husband, as a result she does not have to or is not under obligation to take the name of her husband after marriage at any instance whatsoever. Another factor to be considered is that if the woman gets divorced, or if her husband’s dies and she remarries, then according to this un-Islamic tradition she is supposed to keep changing her name every single time, which is ridiculous!

As a result, it’s clear that a woman is not obliged or for that matter not allowed to use her husband’s surname after marriage but should remain with her father’s surname throughout her whole life. Therefore I would recommend that those who have made this mistake or if you know someone who has, should take this matter seriously and take necessary steps to rectify this situation soon, Insha Allah.
